3 IC whirlwinds for 250 would be good.

Too cheap, IMO.

Really I'd put them on par with a dev formation. Compare to say a void spinner. They certainly aren't worth 300. Even at 275 I'd go for the full squadron for 25 points more.

I'm comparing to Bombards, which are 250pts yet are init 2 and have worse armour (Slow Firing vs. BP2 is pretty much a wash)...

Yes but frankly I think Guard artillery is with the benefit of hindsight somewhat overcosted compared to other races artillery, perhaps because it was developed in comparison to guard arty!

Sticking within the marine list you have whirlwinds - do you really think 3 and IC are on par with 4?

For a 25pt discount, yeah, probably.

So what are the Epic Stats? Is it just a barrage with AP5+?

Well, no one's made one, so there are not Epic stats.

If you can justify BP with that (which I honestly can't comment either way on), then I'd say it should be 1BP IC. If not, then it's 1-2xAP 5+ or 6+ IC.

That would be a special rule. Would either be point fire AP IC shots or 1/2, 1, 2 etc barrage points, no doubt rounding up if you wanted a fraction. But really it would be for a host of reasons 1bp IC each.

And for 25 points left I don't think they could compete with 4 whirlwinds e&C especially if you consider that the likely target are numerous infantry in cover, I think the second template gives extra range, more kills and forces the enemy further apart to avoid cunning two formation targeting tricks.

I'd say four for 375, myself.

Really I have learnt in marine lists not to provide more expensive formation choices unless the list is designed to run with fewer activations than normal. Otherwise the sheer mechanics of the choices you make will force them out of contention.

But on that though - if you lose a whirlwind its 375 points for a 1 template barrage. Also whirlwinds are rare without hunters. So that's 450 base for the formation and that's probably a vulnerable BTS right there.

Considering the stats, something like 45cm AP4+, Ignores Cover, Indirect Fire would be about right for Castellan missiles, if they were used in this list.

Hint: They shouldn't be. :-)

They used to be minelettes that would form a minefield. Can't remember what they are now, heh.

The Castellans are incendiaries now.

I would rather keep the list with standard/accepted tanks where possible.

My interest is getting a playable list up and running rather than testing items for balance.

No doubt, when things are settled, these things can be discussed. Presently, I like Whirlwind formations.

If that makes me a bad person, then I guess a beating will ensue - all I ask however is, not the face. :)
