There's no point discriminating against Thunderwolves IMO, because 40k is basically composed of lots of silly things... I think Thunderwolves fit right in! :)

I'm now waiting for Giant Bat Riders in Codex: Blood Angels.

I am almost tempted to make a 40k Blood Angels army with Bikers-countsas-Bat Riders now.

Almost.

shhh, don't give the design team any more daft ideas :)

If the consensus if for the Thunderwolves in the main list then fair enough, they're still totally ridiculous!

I can't take credit for it, sadly

And fot the serval Space Wolves Heros i see it more fitting this way:

Wolf Lord = Supreme Commander
Wolf Guard Hero = Captain
Runepriest = Librarian
Wolfpriest = Chaplain

Great Companies are big enough to represent a whole Epic army. So the Wolf Lord as Supreme Commander makes sense.

Persoanlly I think the above (so no captain equivalent) shows both the large company structure and the warband approach. Having no commanders running around offsets the larger formations somewhat (can't have it all their own way), allows the SC to shine more, and makes the whole thing a bit more heroic I reckon :)

Interesting thought.

How about htis?

Wolf Lord = Supreme Commander (CC-MWEA, Leader, Invulnerable Save, Supreme Commander)
Wolf Guard Hero = "Captain" (CC-MWEA, Leader, Invulnerable Save)
Runepriest = Librarian (CC-MWEA, Leader, Invulnerable Save, FF-MWEA)
Wolfpriest = Chaplain (CC-MWEA, Leader, Invulnerable Save, Inspiring)

v0.3 has finally snuck out with barely a whimper.

I've stolen some of Chris' ideas (thanks, or "tar pal" as they sometimes say round here :) ), but the biggest change I've made is to the list structure. I've gone for a single 'Space Wolves' formation (a mix of Blood Claws, Grey Hunters and Long Fangs always 6 strong for now).

To explain myself here I felt the formation sizes were getting a bit silly to intentionally avoid the magic number 8, the Codex doesn't seem to imply huge hordes of anything other than Blood Claws, and as I'd costed the Blood Claws and Grey Hunters the same (in an initial draft)  I thought lumping them together would be fun and give a flavour of the more disorganised organisation that they adopt.

Taking one of these allows access to two other formations (including a maximum of one designated 'rare', so Wolf Guard, Wolf Scouts and the much-maligned Thunder wolves), this is twofold, I wanted to avoid the Termi-and-Thunderhawk-and-Warhound  spam builds (this list forces you to drop points into Grey Hunters to get any fun stuff, cheers Chris) and wanted to avoid the big Termi formations (partly out of the need to then add the Crusader, which I think is a nice signature unit for the Black Templars, partly out of fear they'd be rock hard).

Anyway for what it's worth, here it is:

I really like it :)

But spotted a typo: In the Hero upgrade it still talks about A Great Wolf instead of a Wolf Lord and the Battle Leader is missing.

Cheers!

Afraid I've been a bit busy with other things of late so the quality control  maybe wasn't what it should have been :)

If general feedback is good then I think the time to start asking for playtesting might be approaching.

I have 8 x 10mm scale Warmaster giant wolves spare, if anyone here wants some/all to convert Tunderwolves let me know (they are 1cm tall and look pretty much dead on scale/size-wise).

@GlnG: Most excellent idea! I think I still have some of those around somewhere.

@Hello_Dave: My oldest son is busily repainting his SM to a Wolves scheme, so we look forward to testing your list out soon.

Questions:

1. The location of the Strike Cruiser implies that you could take up to two of these per each core formation. Is that your intention or am I missing a restraint somewhere?

2. I like your approach with the Thunderwolfs, but actually think the formation size is too large considering fluff. I think at some point you might consider a formation size of 2 max to reflect.

Very interesting looking list.

Cheers,

Thanks for the feedback Honda (also good to hear that there might be someone  'out there' using the list).

tbh I thought it was implicit in the tournament scenario that you can only take one space craft per army, although re-reading both the rules for the Tournament scenario and for Space Craft in general I can't seem to find the restriction ???. I will therefore make them 0-1 in 0.3.1, unless someone can tell me that I'm being blind

I think the Thunderwolves are going to be the headache in this list, all feedback will be gladly taken on board, I figured making them smaller than the standard Bike Formation (and since people tend to model similar units 2-3 to a base) would already imply their rarity. If more needs to be done then I am certainly open to it.
