40K models are already distorted to be more dramatic (oversized hands, feet and weapons for starters) and fit the artistic sensibilities of the background.

Okay I promise I'll finish soon. :)

Unlike GW, FW's models don't tend to be stupidly excessive... for example:

GW thinks humans look like this.
FW thinks humans look more like this.

No huge muscles, massive feet or hands, the head doesn't suffer from elephantitus, and the rifle isn't longer than the man is tall... FW are the guys who honestly try to bring 'realism' to their models, instead of 'hyper-realism'.

When they set out to make their Thunderhawk Gunship, they considered how big it needed to be to carry its various cargo types, and made the model big enough to carry what the background says it's supposed to carry, instead of just making something that was big enough to look 'okay-ish' and small enough to fit inside a blister packet (SG's Thunderhawk).

When FW came to make their Epic size version, they scaled it down exactly, so yes we can now see exactly how big a Thunderhawk gunship is in comparison to a Rhino, or whatever.

In summation:

- SG made scale-irrespective models over several rough scales (One for infantry/tanks, one for Titans/War Engines, and another for aircraft).
- FW make 6mm scale miniatures.

And yes, Will Hayes has sculpted the leg of an Epic Scale Mars Pattern Warhound Titan in 'truescale'.

Maybe he'll even finish it one day. :D

In other news, Epic Black Templars are awesome.

I have to say I agree with Evil&Chaos here. I'll admit that some of the Imperial Aircraft in particular looked far too large to me at first. But if you check the sizes given in the Imperial Armour books (which presumably are based on everything's relative size in 40K scale seeing as they are printed by Forgeworld about their own models) they are supposed to be much larger than the tanks and vehicles. For example, a Rhino is supposed to be 6.6 metres long, a Leman Russ 7.08 m, and a chimera 6.9 m. Then if you look at the size the aircraft are supposed to be - Lightning Length 10.8 m, Wingspan 13.75 m, Thunderbolt Length 14.2 m, Wingspan 16.05 m, Valkyrie Length 18.5 m, Wingspan 16.9 m, Thunderhawk Length 26.6 m, Wingspan 26.65 m. Given the fact all the aircraft apart from the Lightning are at least twice the length of the most common tanks, the forgeworld aircraft models look pretty spot on to me...

Go Black Templars. :)

Good for them, but that helps not a bit.

The problem is FW's Epic models are incompatible and they have no intention of ever producing compatible minis.

I am just amused by a discussion about who has the most realistic scale of a tank that doesnt exist!

I'm afraid I don't quite see what you are getting at here.

Non-Superheavy tanks from Forgeworld are compatible with Specialist Games tanks and infantry. I have seen Imperial Guard, Eldar and Ork armies mixing the two ranges together and they look fine.

Superheavy tanks from Forgeworld are correctly scaled compared to non-superheavy SG tanks and infantry, so they too are compatible with the Specialist Games range. Their Imperial Superheavies are however slightly larger than the Specialist Games equivalents, so use one or the other. I've seen armies using FW Superheavies along with Specialist Games tanks and infantry and it works fine.

I'm not sure how their Orc superheavies match up, but given the tendency for Orc vehicles to vary considerably in size and appearence, I imagine you can use FW and Specialist Games Battlewagons together in the same army without any problems.

Their aircraft are correctly scaled compared the size of standard tanks and infantry in the Specialist Games range. They look large, but aircraft are much larger than tanks in real life and in the 40K background. So they are compatible with the infantry and armour from the Specialist Games range as well. They are not compatible with the Specialist Games aircraft because these are not to scale themselves. Again, use one or the other.

Their Titans seem to be scaled slightly too small, apparently in order to match the size of the Specialist Games titans. But this means they are, again, compatible with the Specialist Games range. Once again, I've seen them used alongside Specialist Games titans, tanks and so on and they work fine.

So apart form the fact you have to make a choice in one or two instances weather to use the Forgeworld models or the Specialist Games ones (aircraft, Imperial superheavy tanks) the Forgeworld range seems to me to be totally compatible with the models from Specialist Games.

What am I missing?

It's not about the scale.  It's about the styling.  The FW models have much different proportions for the detailing, especially weapons and tracks, than the SG/GW vehicles.  Even in identical scales, the stylistic differences are enough that it just looks wrong when SG and FW vehicles are near each other.  They are clearly from different product lines.  For example, the tracks on a FW Manticore battery are very different from those on SG Chimera and the two don't look right if they are near each other on the board.

But maybe I'm just less accepting of variation.  If you don't mind, mix them as you like.  It's your army and your game.

Um, they are well proportioned space marines? :) Nah no comments I reckon the slightly tweaked list fixes everything :)
