Maybe. One last try...

=====

Okay so now shoot this one down, a simplified "Red Thirst" :

Red Thirst (Special Rule)
- If a Blood Angels formation fails an action test (Undertakes the Hold order) then it suffers from the Red Thirst and has a -1 modifier to Initiative based tests until it next passes an activation test.
- Blood Angels formations have +1 to the dice roll to carry out Engage or Marshal actions.

Death Company (Notes)
- The Death Company ignores penalties for Blast Markers when Engaging?
- The Death Company may never claim objectives, but may contest them.

Possible note: Death Company Initiative rating 2+ or Death Company always suffers from the Red Thirst (Second one being an arse-backwards way of saying they have Initiative 2+ but it can't get any worse).

So *that's* why the Romans built roads everywhere.

So they'll have to be just "Red Marines with different vehicles" then, if every rule that attempts to make them behave like "Blood Angels" just gets shot down...

You can find loopholes in everything if you poke it enough, nothing's going to be perfect.

Roads are also a cure for a formation with 3+ initiative with blast markers on it that's trying to retain... so are blast markers suddenly meaningless and not representative of anything? Of course not. It's a silly example.

would a simple, if you fail a Initiative test you must take an engage action. This Engage action must be directly towards the nearest enemy and you must attempt to BtB if at all possibly. work?

I think that's a slightly wierd thing to say Rug, how many games have you lost largely due to a Terminator unit, Teleporting in and then failing to activate, or a marine formation failing to retain. So this is already in the game. Also in someways the Blood Angels will be more reliable, when you want to retain and engage.. and less realiable if you want to retain and do something else.. that feels about right for Blood Angels.

in another element to be managed is not going to introduce a blood thirsty need for combat and BA like behaviour, it's just going to make BA players use them more conservatively

So it's going to make Blood Angels players act like Blood Angels, not over-stressing their troops and losing them to the Red Thirst?

Quote:
Basically if the Red Thirst does not play a predictable consistant part in the game it's just going to force BA players and armies to be constructed and used in a way to avoid the new rules.

Every single Special Rule in the game does that, IMO.

1 line!

I want the Red Thirst to be both a benefit and a drawback.
By that very requirement it needs to be at minimum 2 lines (Which would still make it one of the smallest Special Rules in the game).

That could work yes, as it is a concrete drawback. I'd note that they still take a BM when doing so so it'll likely be harmful for the formation doing that.

But the Red Thirst should also provide a benefit.

So at the same time: "All Blood Angels formations ignore initiative penalties for having Blast Markers when Engaging" ?

Also : - "The Death Company may never claim objectives, but may contest them"

I still like my Ork-ish Initiative change concept but in the face of public dislike, would the above be palatable instead?

forgetting to follow a special rule should not give you an advantage.

"Eldar may not Garrison"
"Siegemasters Reg HQ always counts as a second BTS target"

Clearly that is not a watertight restriction.

Heck even AMTL, by popular demand, has "God Machines".
