Could one of those folks around back when such decisions were made explain why it's got a transport capacity of 40 in Epic instead of 30? I'm curious.

IIRC the forgeworld model came later, and is slightly undersized compared to the old background.

The transport capacity from SM2 was something like 30 space marines AND a Rhino (internally). The FW thunderhawk isn't big enough for that.

There was a point in early EA testing when the thunderhawk could carry one Rhino. It lost it at some point, and swapped to what we have now.

Also, this is just a technicality, the transport capacity is 8 units not actually 40 marines.

Yes the T/hawk had a free underslung rhino for a while, before the T/hawk transporter was introduced I believe.

Also the Thunderhawk can now transport two formations or one Tactical Detachment plus a Dreadnought.

E40k had optional rules to transport an underslung Rhino-chassis vehicle.

I thought I could remember the Thunderhawk transporting a Rhino! Nice to know I'm not insane. :)

Yup. IIRC it could only transport Rhino-based vehicles other than the Rhino if it forgoe it's infantry transport capacity, as turrets and sponsons occupied the internal transport bay.
After landing it had to spend a turn doing nothing as the vehicle was assembled.
