Dobbsy, I actually agree with you about the "armoured infantry" and said as much on page 2 of this thread. The subsequent suggestion of a LRt was more for fun than anything else. Personally, I dislike the idea of Dreadnought formations as going against the general 'feel' of 40K - and I am sure that the 'venerable veterans' would rather die than be mauled and manhandled as part of the suggested embarkation process - then again, they are already dead aren't they.  :p

Yeah, understood Ginger.

On the formation though, I can see that 4 Dreads may look wrong to some, but I would argue that Epic is more abstract than 40K. Essentially 3x 40K marine squads = 6 EA units in one formation so it's already different to 40K. Having Dreads in a 4 unit formation isn't a stretch from how it's done across EA already and it would make Dreads more useful and utilised.

Yes the arguments against dread formations were not good ones IMHO, ironic that I can effectively use a dread formation in 40k but not in Epic.
But the will of the Epic community was against it, so I conceded :D
Nothing stopping them being used in fan lists or as a house rule of course.

Seriously, though, you can have up to six dreadnoughts in a regular space marine army in 40K.  A formation of dreadnoughts doesn't seem out of place to me.

A dread formation is quite useless unless costed cheaply. Then you have ?ber veteran troops that are cheap mass unit. Very fluffy.

I find they work at 4 for 175pts... though I still wouldn't take more than 2 formations in an army as they're just not that useful as anything other than backfield defenders.

First off, comparing what units can be bought how much in 40k is quite useless, since every army in 40k uses the same template. Second the way to get all 6 dreads is to use traits, which are non-codex things.

So making a variant list with 6 dreads for ~225 (or 175 for 4, but I think that size 6 would be better due to blister sizes) would be fine. But not trying to jam them into codex list.

Except that the codex marine list as presented in Epic allows you to build many other supposedly non-codex type armies.

For example the 'Deathwing' army with only Terminators, or the army with only Assault Marines, or a Ravenwing with only bikers & land speeders.

If you really wanted to make the core Marine army list represent only the strictest Codex-adherents, then Tactical Marine formations should be strictly fixed at 2+ per 1000pts spent.

Anyways, since when did you care about mega-strict fluff adherence Hena?

I thought you were all about what provides for a balanced game...
