1. Land moving transport. Land Raider is the best candidate.

No. It doesn't match today's background.

2. Replace all transports to a dread. This would make it available to all infantry formations. And they would be garrisoned in practice.

I don't think this is a good idea. I'd rather see the marines' transport rules cleared up, not further muddied.

3. Upgrade stats. Make it more devastating in engages or give better save. Will these help? Well engage boost makes it more ideal for podding formations support unit. Or Tac + Dread in Thunderhawk.

I'm in favour of some minor stat changes.

4. Dread formation. It could be made it cheap enough that they can fielded as mass troops or drop pod horde.

Which would be against the background.

1 formation per 1000pts is about the maximum I'd consider.

Hate to be a 'me too' post, but I agree with E&C on those points.

it might be better to test some stat changes to see if that solves the problem.

I don't think they need CC tweaks but just some ability to withstand damage.

I'd be interested to see about giving them RA (despite it not being applicable based on their 40K armour) to see if that made them survive longer without making them over-powered.

Well, the first Dreadnought in everyone's army these days gets to re-roll its damage result dice... :)

Give it 5+ RA then. Or 4+ with InvulnerableSave.

IS isn't good enough I think. 5+ RA would be a better idea. It also keeps them from too effective against MW attacks as well.

5+RA is better against MW than 4+ without RA but with IS.

I like the idea of 5+ RA.

Just my 2 cents...

I'm not a fan of RA for dreads becasue I can't imagine them surrviving a direct hit from a MW.

However I do agree that they need to be made tougher.

Therefore I think a 3+ save is the best way forward as it gives them a better survivability in assaults (where they should excell) but little help against larger weapons at range.

Basicly, a strength 10 hit or 8 +extra D6 (i.e a macro scale weapon) in 40k is very likely to kill a dreadnought, where as several strength 6 or 7 are unliekly. A 3+ save represents this better than RA.

There are also good arguments for the save based around the Dread's small and compact size and ability to take cover and manouver.

Ok looks like this has grown quiet.

We have about 16 to 13 in favour of a dread formation, with many abstainers favouring an armour boost as an alternative solution.  I will start a new poll with the armour proposals included.
