Post subject:  Starting a Necron army: what should i buy?

Hi! I'm interested in starting my own necron army (uhm, my fifth epic army...). I know that nowadays there are no official miniatures, and that most people use DMZ andrayads as proxies (at least for the necrons themselves). I was looking forward to but them some "warriors", but i also wanted to know,

- What proxies do you use?
- What do you use instead of monoliths? Or do people always scratchbuild them?
- What would you recommend me to buy from DMZ as an starting point for my army?

Thank you in advance!!

Hi,

another Necron player, now that's cool! Welcome! :)

- What proxies do you use?

GW Chaos Androids (unfortunately OOP)

You're probably better off buying Andrayadas from DRM (not DMZ ?:;): ). It's a cheaper and faster way to build a Necron army.

- What do you use instead of monoliths? Or do people always scratchbuild them? ?

My Monoliths are made of the aft part from the BFG Scythe class cruiser, my Obelisks are BFG Jackal class cruisers.

There are lots of other options, though. Just have a look on this forum for inspiration.

- What would you recommend me to buy from DMZ as an starting point for my army?

Well, you'll need lots of Necron Warriors, for one thing, plus Immortals and Parias, so I'd go for :

4x Andrayadas Infantry Set 1
1x Vanguard
1x Andrayadas Scouts

That should give you enough models to make 4 Phalanxes with Immortals (Vanguard) and Parias (Scouts). More than 1000 points for ?22, not bad.

Then you'll need some Monoliths and Obelisks and you'll be ready for your first battle. ?:)

For more inspiration, please look to the EA Necron Codex, made by Fran?ois Bruntz and a few other French players (including me ? ). It's in French (for now ?:;): ) but the pictures need no translation and should help you out.

EDIT: to download the Codex, click on the codex picture above "T?l?chargez le Codex N?crons 4.1.1".

Here are some pics of my army... Necrons
This isn't a toot my own horn thing.  I just want to offer you some ideas on the making of the army.

IMO Chaos Android Warriors might be the best way to go, despite the cost and time in obtaining enough of them.
Dark Realm Miniatures are fantastic, but I personally prefer to use the Andrayadas as Immortals and Pariahs in order to get that contrast between them and the Warriors.

It took me about 9 months (and more money than I'd like to admit) to collect the Chaos Androids, but when I started putting them together I found I had over eight Phalanx worth (thats 250 models).  More than enough.

The Destroyers and Heavy Destroyers are easy to make and once again DRM Andrayadas are perfect.  I used Standard Infantry and Heavy Weapon Infantry to distinguish between the Destroyers and Heavy Destroyers, then supplemented with a few Warp Spider torsos when I ran short.

Make sure you get on ebay and bid on 40k Necron Scarabs (be sure they aren't the ones with the wings) as you can use them for Tomb Spyders and Destroyers.
Also check with your local gaming shop and offer the 40k players cash for the Scarabs - I found many Necron players all too eager to offload them and it didn't come with shipping charges.
Pipboy's instructions on Monoliths and Obelisks are the best way to go for right now, although I've seen some tremendous work done by others as well.

Warmaster figurines are a great source of extras for the Necrons (see my link and others too).

Hope this helps.

Um, yeah...pretty much what they said.

My Necrons:

DRM Andrayadas Infantry Warriors & Lord = Necron Warriors & Lord

DRM Andrayadas Infantry Warriors + 40K Scarabs = Destroyers

DRM Andrayadas Scouts = Pariahs

Scratchbuilt and resin cast Obelisks

Scratchbuit and resin cast Monoliths

Sctratchbuilt and resin cast Pylons

I'll have to apologize for the incomplete paint jobs on these old photos.

But here's a shot of one of my Phalanxes... got two... just need a few more Chaos Androids to complete a third and, really, that's all I need.

DRM ... as others have said ... :)

I would like to use the chaos androids, but i can't afford them. That's why i would like to use the andrayads as warriors, although then i would have nothing left for pariahs... maybe i should buy those packs from DRM (although it would mean that i'm not going to make that chaos army after all..)

The monoliths and obelisks seem pretty difficult... Maybe i should try to make a papermodel for them (lalalalala)

Thank you for all the input :)

The Pariahs are pretty easy to make from Swooping Hawk Exarchs, and for some reason, I found those incredibly easy to come across.  There are pics of them floating around here somewhere.

I'd always thought DRM scouts would make better Necron Warriors and DRM basic infantry for Pariah.  Clip the big round tip from that gun and it looks like it would make a good start for the glaive.

Anyone considered using Hubries as a base for Destroyers?  I always seem to get outbid on eBay & I don't have any 40K players to buy from directly.

I use Andrayadas Body Guards as Pariahs (3 of them on one stand) but Vulturs could be used as well.

Hi YO,

I also like DRM coupled with the old GW chaos androids as well as...

28mm 40k Necron bitz...

CAV heavy armor guys...

Alternative Armies psychodroids...

And the odd robo-skeleton pieces.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

You know, i have bought some Hubries and some Heavy weapon Andrayads, and i plan to use the torsos to try to make destroyers (maybe i will not be able once i get my hands upon those minis, anyway)

If people use Andrayads as warriors, vanguards as inmortals, and scouts as pariahs, what are they supposed to use Boduyguards to??? or am i missing something?

If you can't find a use for them, I'll be happy to take them off your hands :D !
