Post subject:  How do you cut up models?
I'm wanting to cut up a Hive Tyrant, but wondering what tools people use to do stuff like this?

I'm wanting to remove the arms and weapons, and unfortunately the whip of the model is part of the leg. So not sure what to use to go about this.

Any ideas?

hmm... considering the Hive Tyrant (epic model) is made from lead/pewter, many blades have been broken before when I used a scalpel.

I just use the same pair of snips that I use to get models off sprue, then shave it back a bit with a scalpel or file it to neaten it up.

Just remember that the model part will 'pinch' on one side when you cut it (due to the blades, there is nothing you can do, so use the back of the blades for the flat surface).  So think about which side you want flat and which side can do with some trimming afterwards.

Don't know if it is the right word in english but a cutter knife is the scalpel thingie which you use to slice carpets. The blade can be sturdy or retractable.

I often use it to slice parts from gw models. Expecially the small SG models because pincers often squisch the parts off and malforms the model, wheras the cutter makes smooth sharp cuts.

EDIT: ok according to anonline dictionary it's called: box cutter, cardboard cutter, or carpet cutter.

For metal, side cutters if I dont mind one side of the cut getting mangled, or a jewellers saw if it needs to be a clean cut either side.

I use the following:

METAL EXACT CUT: razor saw.

METAL INEXACT CUT: clippers.

PLASTIC EXACT CUT: Xacto knife or razor saw.

PLASTIC INEXACT CUT: clippers.

These are the 2 tools I use and have had no problems sawing or cutting metal or plastic, the jewellers saw I have you can change the blades for different purposes.

I think i need to get myself a stanley knife, but if I remember what it looks like correctly, I know why I have never got one for 20+ years. I still have a nasty scar across my finger where I used a stanley knife to sharpen a piece of wood and sliced deeply into my finger. *shudder* I think I was 7 at the time.

I've always got by with a pen knife, but through a lot of blades by putting too much pressure and snapping the blade.

So I cut up my Hive Tyrant with a Dremal loaded with a circular saw and almost took off my finger.... :(

Lextar, if you are doing a lot of cutting that will involve more than average pressure on the blade, I would strongly encourage safety glasses (Lowe's has 'em for $7 I think).  I broke a blade off while cutting PVC board and the blade whizzed an inch to the left of my eye (I felt it shaving my sideburns as it passed :O ).  One inch to the right and I would have lost my eye - NO doubt in my mind.
