Painting Yellow?

I'm planning to paint a test stand of Minotaurs Space Marines. Well i have fewer probems to paint the red stripes on their armour in Epic scale than come up with an easy way to paint them yellow.

I thought about:
Black undercoat -> drybrush with Snakebite Leather -> drybrush with Bloody Red or Mechrite Red -> drybrush with Golden Yellow or Iyanden Darksun -> drybrush with Sunbrust Yellow.

What do you guys think? To much layers?

Another method:
White undercoat -> painting in Sunburst Yellow -> douse in Red Wash or Orange Wash -> wipe of exess ink.

Better?

The only yellow I use is Panzer Yellow !  :)   And if I want it lighter I paint a thin coat white or off white base, then a thinned coat of Panzer Yellow ...

Get that new GW Foundation paint yellow basecoat colour and add that over your choice of basecoat and then build up your sunburst yellow on top of that

Easy orky yellow comes from Iyanden Darksun, wash of flesh wash, layer of bubonic brown. And if you want very bright yellow, Iyanden Darksun, layer of Golden yellow, layer of Golden Yellow 1:1 Sunburst, Sunburst to highhest. Or all those with drybrush.

If you dont want to use Iyanden, then basecoat white and use Bubonic brown instead. Iyanden works just fine on black.

I don't know why the red's in there.  Unless that's for the red quarters of the livery, but then drybrushing isn't the neatest way to achieve that.
So, yes.  Too many layers.  I'd personally stick with yellow base, wash, yellow highlights.  But that's just me.

Also, it might only be useful to people in the UK, but IMO Miniature Paints Deep Red and Mustard easily rival the coverage of Mechrite and Darksun.

Most yellow paints are terrible for coverage.  If you're going to paint yellow, it's vastly easier to undercoat white.

If you have to have a dark undercoat it takes several layers.  Depending on how bright you want the yellow, either use a tan paint and then go up to yellow, or just paint the future yellow parts with a couple thin layers of white (multiple thin layers will give you a smooth color finish) before going to yellow.

To echo PG, I have heard good reviews of the GW base color yellow with respect to covering.  It's possible that could take a lot less to cover.

My own Alaitoc Eldar army (which is painted to SM2 era specs) have been painted using the following method:

1: Undercoat white.
2: basecoat sunburst yellow
3: wash medium thinned down sunburst yellow/blazing orange mix
4 wash very thinned down Snakebite leather to the bottom recesses. Make sure to wipe off excess paint from plain surfaces.
5: touch up yellow on large panels.
6: Highlights using various sunburst yellow/white mixes.

Takes a while to do, but the result is a very bright and warm yellow with a smooth finish.

For marines and infantry in particular I'd go for the method described in the E40k rulebook:
White undercoat/yellow basecoat/wash orange/snakebite leather . Touch up shoulder pads and legs with pure yellow again. Tip off hightlights with yellow/white mix (could be drybrushed on).
SAme basic apporach could be used for vehicles or you could adopt a technique closer to the one I use for the Eldar. However I don't think it is a problem that Marines look a bit rougher than Eldar, so heavier use of drybrushing should look ok I think.

FOr a really gritty look you could do like I did for my Bad Moonz: Still using white undercoat I washed with a rusty mix of Snakebite LEather and black.
It depends on how you view marines Actually a gritty mooking marine army might look pretty sweet and "realistic" (well relatively speaking :p)

I'll answer as others, depend of what kind of yellow you want.

-Bright yellow, like 10 year old white dwarf funny bad moons:
White undercoat, sunburst yellow & highlight of bad moon

-"realistic" dirty yellow: either yellow on white with brown ink to make it dirty then highlights, or if you have to paint on something painted black or a dark color, coat of foundation Ilanden dark sun, ink or not, then another yellow.

Anyway, never use normal yellow on a dark thing, but we all know this :D
