I've made a small start on the army...

I'm undecided on the Gun Drones bases... 40 by 12mm ovals would be better in game but 30 by 20mm ovals do look better and would more easily differentiate different types of infantry within units.

I'd say 30x20. The depth they afford looks great. From an anecdotal perspective, for whatever that's worth, I've found the narrow basing matters more in cc than FF.

40x12 ovals are out of the question, miniatures are tight enough with rectangles and if i were in your shoes i would avoid putting the guys so much to the border so they do not lose paint easily. On the other side, i like better rectangles or hexagons for playing reasons ...

Where are you getting your black plastic bases from? I'm sure you mentioned Magister Militum before, but he's unresponsive when it comes to the issue of custom bases. Really need an alternative.

I like your Knarloc - what did you make him out of?

I think I will go with 30 by 20mm for the Drones and Pathfinders, all the other infantry on 40 by 12 ovals.

I like the look of oval bases for armies like Tau, Eldar and Tyranids and will live with a little reduced resilience for the models. As initially mocked up I'm also basing all the hovering models in the army on high clear plastic acrylic rod for the looks of it, despite it again reducing resilience. I'll try and be careful but will likely have to glue them back on occasionally.

I've not used Magister Elsmore, the bases are from Lazerline Designs. He mostly sells on ebay (he had a website but feel out with his hosting company who gave his website address to a shoe company instead). I can PM you his email if you or anyone like? I've bought a handful of big custom base size orders. I like the 1.5mm laser cut acrylic bases as they're the same height as an Epic base.

The Knarloc is an OOP rare Kroot Bird (available as a FW events model, meant to be the ancestor bird Kroot evolved from) with a head swap from a Kroot hound. I'm going to use is as a 3rd Krootox stand so will need to convert a crossbow and riders on its back.

Oh yes, that's the one. I messaged him through eBay back in Oct '18 and he said he wasn't currently producing plastic bases, but would be in the next few months. I'll try again. His email might be handy, thanks.

Thanks for the Kroot Bird info. I see a few on eBay - probably too expensive to use as a 'curiosity' piece in my future Tau army ;)

Oh that's awesome! Excellent conversion work. Makes me want to come up with a stat line for the knarloc...

I should have expected it but these new AI Tau models seem really big. I'm probably going to mount my Tigersharks on 105mm wide oval bases same as my Orcas, which seems oversized, but appropriate for the models. I'm going to live with most of my army being 6mm but with some 8mm scale aircraft added.

I’m enjoying painting my Tau so far :) The orange has a variable patchy finish but I like it as it looks like a sort of camo effect.

I love using contrast paint for Epic models! Look how nicely the shading and highlighting look on the orange colour on this piece yet this has been done by a single all over coat of contrast paint over pale cream Wraithbone primer.

Nice work, Glyn! The contrast paints work quite well. And I'm sure it's a quick method too.
