Hey, sorry if this is the wrong sub section for it - but my head is spinning looking at Imperial Guard stuff.

There's lots of choice, which is a good thing!

Lots of old stock on eBay for tanks and also the excellent Vanguard proxies and the Trolls stuff which keeps sneaking up on eBay.

Someone had done a good size comparison showing differences in vehicle size and the difficulty in mixing ranges but I can't seem to find the topic in my history.

I am thinking of getting an Imperial Guard army as something that can start small and easily expand - something that I can proxy for multiple guard lists and also something good for teaching myself and friends Epic. My favourite tank sculpts I saw in White Dwarf were the (I think) 3rd ed. ones for Epic 40k where they had lots of stowage and sandbags on them and little dozer blades:

Then there are the Vanguard proxies which look pleasantly chunky but their super heavies are probably more exciting to me than the smaller tanks:

Then the Trolls have every flavour of LR under the sun - but I'm not sure what their size / quality is like:

I am asking for peoples' subjective opinions about - if you were starting from scratch, which road would you go down for IG - stick with one supply - be patient on eBay for old ones - and would you mix and match models from different ranges?

I would avoid mixing Forgeworld and GW metals if at all possible. Vastly different dimensions across the hull, tracks and length. The exception would be the FW conquerors since the variance would make sense.

Other than that though, all iterations of Leman Russ mix quite well in my experience. The two piece EA Russes are a fair bit more squat looking than the E40k versions but are within expected variance. The trolls stuff mixes well too. I'd confine them to a detachment on their own though, rather than mixing and matching witching detachments.

AH! That was what I was trying to remember!

Yeah the metals from different GW eras did seem to vary between being skinner or being "squat", heh.

If you do decide on my centurion it may interest you to know that several new turret variants will be released this year including a long barrelled cannon and a stumpy siege mortar and several others to plus we have other plans for this hull further down the road. The existing tank is the first of many.

I would stick to one model line.
As GW models are rather hard to find these days I would go with Trolls or Vanguard. They have full stock of different vehicles and you have no limitations when comes to variants.

I wouldn't worry about source. I've got all the above in my collection and fan made proxies to boot as well and they work just dandy in an army. Just don't mix in a formation as then it looks odd, usually. Granted, the theme of my army is a combined source form several regiments involved in a specific battle so the little variations all work out to fit my theme where different regiments would have equipment from various patterns naturally so it "works" (YMMV). FYI, FW Russes were based on the 28mm Stygian Pattern Russes they made way back then (sadly no longer-that thunderer was amazing and it was nice to not have just Mars Alpha everything). The 3rd edition GW Leman Russ is far far superior in all forms over the 4th edition recast release so if you need to slip on one, spend the extra effort for finding them.

FW & GW Epic tend to be different sizes. So if that's an issue for you, then that is something to take into consideration. Otherwise as others have mentioned ... you have some options. Vanguard, IMO, should cover most if not all of what you need, I'd think ...

I was planning to do a tank legion in each era (except for mk1 russ, which ill use as conquerors for the SM2 russ).

… might take me a while

mk1+mk2 for mordian tank regmint
ragnaruss for kriege armoured regiment
FW for steel legion armoured regiment
FW for tallarn
e40k and SG tank coys in non-armoured regiments (e40k are the best, but too much effort to paint the stowage in army side numbers)

shame as i have no interest at all in playing tank legion lists really


going from absolute scratch i think id go for SM/E40k/SG ones on ebay, simply because even though it might take a bit longer it is probably the cheapest option

Personaly id go with a modern mini from whichever manufacturer you prefer - in my case vanguard probably. The crispness of modern 3D sculpts and casts really blow the socks off the old 90s stuff, and definitely the late SG stuff when the moulds were falling apart. Not to mention if you have to rely on stripped 2nd hand minis which spent their early years being rolled around in some kids bag getting bent out of shape. Save the hours on ebay waiting for a reasonable price too.

You can always get some stowage extras from WW2 historicals to get the lived in look if you like that.

AFAIK nothing that goes on treads. They got some random shit for scenery and depots around but that's more trouble than it's worth...

I think they only come with the one pair, but you can buy alternative sets separately.
