Hi Guys

All of my armies have been mounted on the old epic rectangular bases and I was happy with them,
However after using TMG round bases for my 6mm Quar which also I mounted vehicles on round
bases something that I have never done before and kind of like now ;)

Now I have a few addtions to add to old stuff I am looking into rebasing, sadly I superglue
my minis as well as the small stone ballast, have done before using modelling cutting pliers.

Will probably have to cut the lot, cutting nor the drama its the round bit that is left underneath
the base if you know what I mean ? and before have used a sharp craft knife to cut this bit of
but it usally damages the base of the mini and have had some nasty cuts in my thumbs from it :(

Stabbing in the dark here but any of you guys have a good solution maybe.. worth a shot ;)

I think he was look for advice on getting the existing bases off without destroying the figures.

can i see a picture close up of one? depending on metal vs plastic and what type of lacquer used you might be able to use something like Desolv and be able to pull the minis off the base. On the other hand you might melt paint and plastic too.

It might work quite well if you used not that much glue in the first place.

I've done my fair share of this - in my case mostly getting plastic minis off the old square bases but also strips. I am not sure if superglue makes it easier or harder than poly cement (superglue is very strong but poly cement sort of melts the parts together). Either way, I find it a right pain in the proverbial.

The method I have settled on is not particularly great, but I have not found a quick and good one. Basically I bend the base to try to release as much of the round mini base as possible, the bases do tend to snap underneath the model which is useful. Occasionally (rarely) that's enough to get a knife or needle under to pop it out. Something narrow but inflexible I find best, like a small flat screwdriver. More usually, I have to clip around the round base, leaving a disc still stuck to the bottom of the mini. Then it's knife time - and it's this part you need to be careful: either your fingers take a battering or you cut on a surface, but trying to cut a 6mm disc lengthways tends to result in a few broken infantrymen.

To be honest I'd be glad to hear of a better way. I certainly wouldn't attempt to rebase an entire army otherwise. However I suspect what makes the last step so difficult is poly cement, superglue might actually be easier so long as it's been applied sparingly.

Cheers for the advice guys much appreciated,

I will have a look through the options and test a few, my main concern is my termies as the arms
will probably break off when holding and cutting etc :(

Hopefully superglue will be better as I know what you mean about poly cement melting into the
old plastic minis, hopefully my metal ones will be ok..... probably just jinxed myself ;D

sadly yes it is a whole army im looking at rebasing, I am adding to it so though this would be the
best time, I have kinda grown fond of the round ones that's all and would like to use those
in the future ;) Its my sally army and I want to base the vehicles on round bases too ;)

I re based a lot of IG troops when the game moved from square to rectangular bases. (No, it was not required. But I thought the IG just looked cool in firing lines.)

My method was to use some sharp (but small!) tin snips to cut around the figures in the square bases. Then, I'd use an Xacto knife to cut the remaining black button from the base off of the round peg of the infantryman.

The trick to the Xacto knife was to use a rocking motion as you tried to cut the base away from the peg of the model. Just pressing straight down usually broke the legs off of the infantryman, and using a sawing motion often had the same effect with the added unfortunate consequences of sliced flesh.

The biggest tip I can offer is to use a file on the bottom of the miniature after you've cut the last b[t of base away from the peg. This removes any leftover traces of base, but more importantly makes sure you've removed any trace of super glue or the melted surface of plastic created by modeler's cement. Really great for ensuring that you get a nice clean surface for the new glue.

Superglue's much more brittle than poly cement, and can be made even more brittle by putting the figures into the freezer overnight - that should weaken the bond a bit, and make it easier to snap off the figures if you bend the old bases.

Cheers for the options guys will bare them in mind and try them out, main worry is still the termies
as they are not a one piece miniature, I feel I will glueing many arms back on :(

After much messing about, I finally got the re basing down to a decent safe result, All of my minatures are metal so im not sure what the results would be on plastic infantry.

But using the new GW cutting pliers I either cut round the bases or snapped them off, the plastic disc left
glued to the underneath was simply cut through with the pliers.

Im not keen on putting money gw s way but I still use there paint and the cutters even though expensive are by far the best quality I have found, I have bought cheap options in the past and they go blunt quickly but these bad boys have stayed sharp and cut straight at all angles, super for removing figs from molding strip also as they cut so cleanly. I even use them to cut the dogs and cats claws ;)
