I'm planning a new army that I can use across a few game systems and I'm going to give "orks" a go. As they're going to be used in several universes and I'm not a fan of green I need some other choices.

Google reveals lots of other options in 28mm, but nothing for 6mm other than "Skinnerz Red" which I like a lot.

The army won't be using GW models much (if at all!), and I'd like something which shows off the rather nifty sculpting that's available out there.

I'm going to paint a few test stands using some old GW boyz and they'll be based for winter - dark brown ground with white snow patches.

So does anyone have skin tone suggestions? Even more helpful would be pictures!

Red's definitely in the mix, but what about other options? :sos

I remember back in the day, GW often painted their orcs brown (there was even a shade of paint called 'orc brown') I always thought they looked awesome in a pale brown colour

My friends aim for Tolkienesque orcs and goblins in Warmaster, where they paint them a kind of pale sallow colour as though they've never seen sunlight.

I like the colours you've used on them.

I love the patterned loin cloths on those, and the variation in green looks good.

So the undercoat is drying on the 4 test bases.

I'm going to try:

Blue
Red
Brown/beige as a homage to those orcs of my youth.
Grey

I'm trying to go for GM humans rather than smart fungi.

That was going to be my suggestion. Maybe a pale grey, as long as it doesn't appear to just be a dark white?

My aim's to go for colours that I can achieve high contrast between shade & highlight to bring out the detail in the tiny wee fellas. For the grey I'm hoping for almost black up to a fairly light colour.

Right,

First two test stands are done - blue & Brown:

The blue is a bit brighter than I'd planned but I'm liking the brown. If I go with brown I'll need to change the colour of the clothes methinks.

Next up will be the red & grey.

I like the brown meself but I agree with Apoco - try a kind of blue-grey, like Tau skin or less blue. Could be good.
