A new year and a new project, one I've been thinking about for some time. I thought I'd do a work in progress thread to get some ideas and spur me along. I've been planning an epic based version of Space Hulk for a while and this afternoon managed to grab some time to start on the tunnels.

I could just photocopy the original Space Hulk board sections but I fancied something a bit more involved, so I'm putting together 3D scenic versions of the passageways. I'll do a few key types in plasti-card and then cast a bunch more from resin. Anyway, enough chat more pictures.

File comment: The figures have magnetic strip stuck to their bases and there is another magnetic strip under the holes for the bases, this locks the bases in pleasingly.

File comment: I have only done a wall on one side, I was planning to do two but I think I might leave it like this, it makes seeing the figures easier and moving them too. Thoughts?

Further questions, any ideas for floor textures? Also, I'm not that keen on the colours I used on the "genestealer" but I want to have something that contrasts with the Deathwing termies. Suggestions gratefully accepted.

Great idea for a project.

I'm not quite sold on one wall being higher than the other, but I understand why that appeals. It may also make it able to be cast as a single piece?

Progress, of a sort. I tried using some fine fabric mesh stuck to the plasticard floor as chequer plate but the drill rips it up when I try and put the holes in. I've ordered a 6mm punch to see if that works better. To try the drilling I needed to take the magnetic strip off, I'll also need it off to cast so the trial corridor is looking a bit shabby now.

I also tried building up the other wall to the same height and while it looks pretty good it is almost impossible to get the miniatures in the holes without tweezers or a knife to poke it with. I guess my choices are either to make the corridor a lot wider and/or lower and do both sides or stick with the one side approach, which I think I'm leaning towards.

Looking good so far. If you had the figures on a magnetic base, then you dont have to worry about drilling holes and they may stick to the mesh. You just need to represent the square moves.

Hi!

I really like that alternate way. I wonder where he got the magnetized tiles used for floors?

Same way I did for my 6mm Heroquest board (and will do for my own micro hulk when I get around to it)

Cut them out of magnetic paper and glue them on one by one ;-)

Loving the previous work, that Heroquest board is fantastic. For my own project I always picture the Space Hulk corridors as narrow and claustrophobic and I guess that's the impression I want to give, even with one wall only. Perhaps I'm also influenced by the old, old GW dioramas that had the wall off on the viewer's side. They were usually elaborate fight scenes with lots of detail. Anyway, what I have roughed up now is kind of what I had in mind so I think I'll make a new master and try and add a bit more detail to the walls, conduits and boxes etc.
