So a question for the space marine players
Do you number your tanks and if so what numbering convention do you use?

Basically how do i number the 2 tactical formation's rhino's from each other and from the Devastator Formation's?

Let alone adding in Land Raiders and Preds?

Also, i know the old tactical/elites/assault symbols

But is there Scout, Armor, Aircraft symbols as well?

marines dont really number their vehicles based on the current fluff, more into naming their vehicles...also depends on the chapter/legion you're painting as they will differ on how they mark/ID their vehicles...

for my own marines i originally started numbering the rhinos/predators but no longer and my Land Raiders normally get a name...one thing would be to give unique markings to any vehicles that would be command vehicles used to carry characters (eg supreme commander in a vehicle)

end of the day its up to you how you feel like doing it...see all sorts of marking systems, depends on the taste of the player...

I believe transport vehicles would display the company and squad numbers of the unit they were attached to. So a tactical detachment could be squads 1-3 or 4-6 from companies 2-5, or any numbers from 1-10 from companies 6-7.

Not sure about other vehicles, though.

In many cases I use the old WWII German system, along with tactical symbols like seen in the old Adeptus Titanicus, using the WWII French Playing card system ... or UK geometric/unit symbols ... Available from I-94 in the USA in 6mm - http://www.i-94enterprises.com/products ... cal-scans/ The German 3 number system. The first number is the company, the second the platoon, and the third the vehicle in the platoon.

... French using Aces, Clubs, Spades, Hearts, etc. ... UK - Triangle, Square, Circle, Diamond, etc. ... Or I just do somthing even simpler ... Image Image Image

It's totally chapter specific. For instance you can see the naming pattern used by the Minotaurs in the IA Baddab War books but it has nothing in common with the scheme (as in there doesn't appear to be a scheme) for the Lamenters in the same books. So in short: Do what you like.

Numbers like the old WWII Wehrmacht style is good though I personally like that more on Guard myself. Another common thing to do is keep units in the same formation painted with a small variation in things like accent or recessed panels and whatnot. For example, the rhinos in this tactical formation use black recessed front panels. Those devestators over there have brass on the top hatches...

Hi!

Those look nice!

For Imperials I'm partial to the Roman Numeral use. Particularly on SM vehicles.

Thanks for the help guys, a bunch of really great suggestions and examples.

I was thinking of doing roman numerals, but I never really like the look of just a I or II or III without getting all those cool IV VI and stuff in there.

I may be doing the three digit number system for them i think.
