How big are those rivets?

The rivets have a diameter of .5mm.
The grooves are .2mm wide.
The smallest "big" raised feature is the wall around the circle at the side of the struts. The wall has a width of .4mm.
The turbine is surround by a 5 sided box which has a piece of wall between to holes, which is a bit less than .4mm.
In those holes are tubes with a diameter of .2mm, but they are barely visible. You'd see them probably better if you dry brushed them, but they are recessed s that's difficult.

There is a resin, which allows fine detail. I'll test ist in the future, but I will have to order it in the states, so it will take some time - especially as I have not ordered it yet :)

I'm playing around with a Marine model and doing my third model now. I started out with just too much detail. It didn't print well. Now I'm down to something simple. I will post images once I get a model I'm content with.
The "high res resin" might help here, but it seems to be less easy to handle and I'm reluctant to open a second front of possible problems.

Regards
SH

It was a long way, but finally I'm done for - content, but beat.

I decided to do something along a MKII or III. I started with high hopes and a much too detailed model. I reduced detail step for step, and the only the helmet and a discernible backpack prevailed.
Somewhere along the way I changed the resin - different manufacturer, different properties.
For one the color is orange instead of red and it's harder when cured and feels close to a hard plastic miniature, while the red one felt more like an Airfiix orr HaT miniature.
I thought using the red resin was messy, but the orange one tops it easily. It's like sand from a beach, which you will encounter for weeks after returning home.

I printed a stalker besides the SM models, to be able to compare the quality of the resins and the results are visibly sharper.

I did multiple test prints of miniatures and you can see this among other things in the different thickness of bases and patterns in the armor.
Image

But all that is like pixel peeping in photography. Might be interesting, but what counts is the print or in our case the painted model.
6 models compared to ordinary space marines. My models are from different generation as can be seen in the bases and the band around the helmet. In older revision it sags down over the eye portion.
There are three poses in this photograph. The officer striding with gun to the front, the ordinary Epic SM pose, and an unarmed guy strolling around, beating time.

And a last shot from an oblique angle.

This was meant to be a test, whether I would be able to do some infantry.
And I'd say: Yes.
Where to go from here ?
There is some room for improvement, like in the face, probably adding some decoration to the armor or additional armor plates and weapon options.
But I'm fed up with infantry in the moment and luckily, I do not really need SM models.
So I let infantry rest for a while and start something different, preferably less organic.

While waiting for the Marines to grow, I designed some Eldar objectives fitting to the old models. I'm painting them right now - so they are done.

I'm out-phaseing my old GW flyers and replace them with Forgeworld stuff. The FW Thunderbolts are already replaced, but instead of paying through the nose for not longer available FW Marauders I will do my own models.
I love the FW Marauder, but I will do something different, probably a bit more Space Marine like. I'll see.

Regards
SH

Really exciting stuff! Wish I could fast-forward a few years and get one of these printers on the cheap... :)

Yes, that's true. With a helmet like that they would be called Raven ( for crying out loud Blood Ravens already exist or Crows). But than I would have to paint them black. Hmmmh.

Or because they are the most relaxed and cool SMs around -

Image

they could form the Dude chapter :)

5 poses:
Helmet on, bolter in hand hanging down the side.
Helmet shoved above brow, walking, bolter to the front.
No helmet, leaning on rocket launcher.
Helmet, behind left arm, fastend to armor. Bolter raised on shoulder, body leaning to the left.
Helmet in left hand, bolter resting on right hip, walking.

I must d something with those faces. I just checked, they have noses, eyes and mouth, but probably just too small to be noticed, Or has it to do with printing parameters ? I'll run some tests.

SH

Those are simply awesome!

Ok now I'm definitely getting one, now I must figure out the logistics to have printer and resin shipped to Italy...

Considering the faces, I think if you want them clearly visible you have to exaggerate the features a lot, like a Scream mask... See the plastic SM sergeant to see what I mean :)

Yes, I agree.

I started out with anatomically correct sized heads, but that's very small.
I printed some heads only, and when I take a deep breath, I will inhale them.

The GW heads are - depending on model - nearly twice as large. So I scaled my up.
In addition I did a more geometric head design to test.

I'm just printing the first hull of a Marauder replacement, when I print the wings, I will smuggle some big headed SMs and some with the new head shape in, to see whether this will be better.

I started working on my Marauder replacement. As it will be used by my SMs, I created a mix from Thunderhawk and Marauder.
The length of the hull is 6.5vm and the span is 8.2cm. That's about as large as the FW Marauder, but my design is more massive.

But I had a terrible Friday - nothing worked out - i made mistakes, the printer didn't print correctly - a wasted day.

But once Friday was over, everything started to work again and I got a good grow.

I could salvage enough parts from the Friday disaster.
I put the salvaged parts together and painted them in a frenzy - as usual a most simple paint shame. It cries for a pinup at the side of the machine.
The two samples are not 100% what they should have been - thanks to the misprints - but good enough to judge what the things will look like and to determine what I would like to change.

I.e. the bolts at the wing are too big and the cockpit is out of scale compared to other epic models and also compared to the flyer's turrets.

Have a nice weekend
Stephan
