For my chaos army, I think I'd like to base the infantry on washers to give them more of a "disorganized Chaotic horde" look. I am having a hell of time with the basing, however.

Ideally, I would like to paint the models on the sprue and then glue them to the bases later.

I tried covering some washers with spackle and then imprinting appropriately-sized holes into it. Unfortunately, when the spackle dried, it appears as though the holes shrunk and the infantry models don't fit anymore.

Any ideas? Would love to hear your thoughts!!

I'd paint then glue the guys. Apply spackle or other filler as appropriate and let dry. Then paint with something like Vallejo sandy paste. The last step should make sure the plinths are well hidden in the base from the inevitable shrinkage.

I use washers all of the time. I cut out circular cork from the cork sheet stuff (very thin) to fit the washer, then I use a paper punch to knock out holes where the infantry will fit in. Peel the back off of the cork, stick it to the washer, and you're good to go.

If you're using plaster or similar mix in plenty of PVA glue (and even sand and paint if you like). Then push the models into it, and sculpt as needed. Once this has dried the models are glued in place and the plaster can't shrink.
It's a common technique in Flames of War, where the bases are often just flat sections of plastic, although I've added the PVA etc for extra strength.

Look at the bases that E&C is putting out with Troublemaker Games for Defeat in Detail. Circular and awesome. I am waiting for mine before basing my Orks.

E&C is one option, then there is also Fenris games. Prepunched plywood. I used their hex variant on my cultists (in sig).

I will say, though, that although the Dark Realm bases look better and are probably less work, one way in which the Fenris bases are superior is that the holes are cut out randomly, giving a more "chaotic" look to the troops on them. It appears that all the Dark Realm hole placements are uniform.

So, either one is fine, I guess!

You won't be dissapointed with the bases, I am sure. The only drawback is that you have to glue top and base with PVA, but that's done in seconds. Good luck!
