I'm stretching my Grots by giving them some Minderz.  The current batch of stands will have two Runtherdz and a Painboy.  I'm going for a "generic Ork" or even "Snakebite" color scheme of greys and leather for the clothing, and I'm looking for some opinions on how to paint the hair squigs of the Minderz.

I'm having trouble thinking of a color that would be a good contrast without detracting from the stand overmuch.  Any thoughts?  Better yet, do any of you have any close-up pictures of Runtherdz or Painboyz that you are particularly proud of?

There's a fuzzy picture of one of my current Grot stands in the foreground of this picture; it's the stand in front to the right of all the blast markers.

That ork formaiton looks to be in a world of hurt! :;):

I try to go for reds, blacks, whites, light tan and leather colours with orks. Lighter colours stand out more and look better on table. 'Realistic' dull colours blend into the table because of the scale. Therefore if you want a figure to have a certain colour scheme it is worth picking colours that are several shades lighter than you would use on a larger scale figure.

Some of my oddboyz can be seen in my ork gallery (bottom pictures and also on the gargants).

I like little splashes of reds and blues with snakebite style color schemes.

I also "stretch" my grot stands with the old (SM1/SM2) ork boyz.  The ones that came on the sprues with the battlewagons are noticably smaller than the following versions and when mixed in with grot models, you don't even notice.  Heck, next to the slightly oversized character models, they practically look like grots anyway.

Might also be fun to put an Ork on a Grot stand and make a little whip for him out of thin wire.  Or a cattle prod!  What do cattle prods look like, anyway?

Hi!

I like this idea. I will try spreading out some grots as well with mine.  :)

I want to thank you all for your great ideas.  I'd especially like to thank Markconz for his warning about dull colors and for the incredible close-up pictures of his Orks.  The last picture, with the Painboy on the Warlord's stand, convinced me that I needed to pick a color that exists somewhere else on the same figure in order to "unify" the paint scheme.  I therefore chose to go with white hair on the Painboy (it matches his smock), and "clan colors" on the Runtherdz (my warband has Bad Moonz and Evil Sunz clans).

I finished painting the figures tonight at 10 PM (I spent WAY too much time for three measly Grot stands; oh, well) and I chose to take pictures of the figures still on the sprue (rather than risk insanity and loss trying to base them while I'm so tired).  I use 20x20 bases, because most of my army was painted in the halcyon days of Space Marine (even before Titan Legion came out!).

To reward you all for your help, I give you the finished products (for real this time, down to the blood-splatters on the Painboy's smock): head on, front and back.  I apologize both for the fuzzy pictures and my megre talents.  Neither are worthy payment for your assistance, but both are the very best that I am capable of providing.

Edited to show finished products.

I agree completely.  Marckonz has done an amazing job.  His control of the brush is incredible.  I can barely see the detail on the models that he brings out (by leaving the black basecoat behind).

Thank you all again.  The three stands are now painted, based, touched up, and the base is painted.  The only thing left is to apply a sealant matte finish (I'll do it tomorrow).  I've updated the pictures on my website (and added a third link for a more "head on" view);  see my second post above for links.

Yeah, yeah, I know.  Many people don't considered the stand "finished" until the base has been flocked or textured, but I haven't found a cover that I like.  The grey is supposed to be "ash waste" or "urban".  I need to find a sand or talus that gives me exactly the effect I want.  Until then, these three will fit in with the over sixty other Ork stands I have that have the exact same finishes on their bases.
