I would really appreciate some help with this problem.

I usually paint my figures and vehicles with a quick spray of base color, light drybrush of highlight and then details.  This works great for my armies which are basecoated black, and I can even get a good even coat on my infantry and smaller vehicles in other colors without obscuring the detail.  However, with my larger vehicles, spraying other base colors (red, blue, gray), leaves me with a patchy coat with some areas where the paint is too thin and others where its too thick.  I don't even like the undercoat I get with gray or white spray primer.

I am considering:

1. Undercoating with black spray primer followed by a heavy drybrush of the basecoat (although I'm worried this won't look right next to my hoards of infantry that are already finished using a spray on coat of the base color).

2. Undercoating with white brush on primer which I know will give me a good even finish without obscuring detail, then brushing on the base color (although this would be more time consuming).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

I always, base coat the color I want, wash with black or brown or both, then dry brush.  The wash evens out the base coat, and the color differences in the spray ...

Hi LeeD,
a difference between the apearance of troops and machines isn't that big a thing - the scale effects and the difference in texture between man (ork?) and machine would also make a difference in real life, so I wouldn't see that as a problem.
My methods are:
1 - black undercoat for dark colours or metallics, with white painted over the black for brighter spots
2 - black undercoat with a heavy white drybrush for asomewhat used effect - the trick is tolet the black appear in the edges not caught by the drybrush
3 - nice white undercoat and a couple or 3 thin coats by paintbrush for lighter colours. We don't get many shades of undercoat here, unless they're car primers, which may be thick, or really $ and small tins. :( Unusually, I found a matt rust red undercoat for cars to be thinner than most and brilliant for toned down reds - ideal for Ad Mech, for example. :blues:

Hey Lee.

My advice is all based on that time long ago when I used to paint all the time! I'd be interested to hear how you actually spray your minitures? What i mean by that is, do you spray them in one continious burst? Or a few shorter bursts of spray?

The method I use has always been to Undercoat with spray paint (primer based). Using short sharp bursts while roating the model in my hand or on a spray board slowly. Once the primer has dried (usually a few minutes later) then I apply a wash over the model. Very watered down colour the same colour as the primer. Do not use inks for this purpose as they will work differently once they've dried.
Just watered down Chaos Black/Skull White. This is to eliminate all the bare metal/plastic parts that the spray just can't get too.

From there add the main colours or details as you see fit. The trick is always to apply paint with a less is more attitude. Building up until you have the right amount of paint on the model so as not to distroy any of the details.

A.

ps sounds like it takes longer than it actually does :)

Thanks guys for the advice.  I'll try some of the different techniques and see which works best for me.

Adrian, my infantry are mounted on 24-inch wooden sticks, about 50 figures per stick.  I do 2 light passes with the spray paint, right to left (with the nozzle angled slightly to the left), and then left to right (with the nozzle angled  slightly to the right). This is done from the front, then top, then back, for a total of 6 light passes that gives a good even coverage without obscuring the detail.

The vehicles are mounted about 10 per stick and are PVA glued to short perpendicular stands, allowing access to the underside.  The problem for me seems to be that although the paint is applied in light, even coats, on vehicles with alot of large, flat surfaces(ex old plastic land raiders), the paint seems to run a little before drying, collecting in crevasses and thinning out on the flat surfaces.  The only color this doesn't seem to happen with is black. I'm using testor's model master spray enamel.

I have had good succes with this method.

1. GW spray undercoat, black or white depending on your main colour
2. Airbrush the base colour to get an even colour all over
3. Drybrush the next layer in your highlight colour
4. Add you detailed colours
5. Drybrush weathering for effect

It seems to work for me.

Thanks CAL001, I've been thinking about purchasing an airbrush.

Thanks CAL001, I've been thinking about purchasing an airbrush.

I second the recommendation for getting an airbrush. Just like everyone says, it gets some getting used to, but in the end it's brilliant.

I do what CAL001 does, minus the last part about weathering. Using spray undercoat and an airbrushed base color makes it very easy to do uniform-looking vehicles and infantry.

Thanks to everyone for your advice.  For anyone who's interested I've found a good undercoat that works for me.  I am currently working on three Imperial armies (Cadian, SM, and PDF) that have a gray basecoat, and I tried Krylon all purpose gray primer #1318 on some vehicles.  It gives  good, even coverage,  is totally flat, and literally dries in seconds.  Even with several coats it didn't obscure detail or run.
