Hey folks, I'm new to 6mm. How do you seal your minis? For my 28s and 15s I use krylon crystal clear coat, then dullcote, then hand paint Matt varnish on any shiny bits I missed. Would that also for 6mm, or would that be too thick of a varnish that may obscure detail?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

I usually spray them with a layer of glosscote and two layers of dullcote, keeping them thin.

I used to do that but I have had paint come off of figures due to wear from my miniature cases.

My test batch yesterday pretty much got wrecked, good thing I was just trying out schemes. I normally put a pretty thick coat of gloss on. That definitely doesn't work in 6mm. The cross belt detail on the assault marines was obscured.

Ah well, that's what tests are for.

Thanks for the advice fellas, I think I'll go with a thin coat of glosscote followed by a thin coat of dullcote...maybe two....

A coat of gloss for protection, followed by a coat of matt (Dullcoat) to flatten the effect.

Purity seal * - 2 coats. I've found spraying in cold humid weather can cause a misty finish.

I use at least a double layer of Dullcoat. One sprayed for an initial coat and then I go back with the paint on version for a real protection layer. Works like a charm. I also find that airbrushing or spraying a couple of light coats along the way (especially on larger models or ones with intricate painting) helps a lot as well.

In other products I hear that the ArmyPainter Antishine is at Dullcoat levels of awesomeness. Haven't tried it personally but seen side by side comparisons and couldn't tell which was what.

I does occur to me that I tend to paint my figures, then wash them with a mix of Future Floor Polish and inks (or Devlan Mud), before the Dullcote. The Future probably adds a layer of protection I hadn't considered.

Do you have a local craft store like Michaels? If so check out the Krylon Gloss and Matte sprays if they sell them. Great coverage, and very good prices

I use Testors Dullcote, 2 spray coats, wait 24 hrs or more between coats. And always in low humidty and I like to set them in the sun to dry ... I get mine at Michael's also. You can usually get 40-50% off coupons online or in the newspaper ...

How does krylon matte compare to dullcote?

It is very flat matte. It is created for art projects.

I stopped using Dullcoate because I was having issues with it not being very matte. The Krylon is excellent. And half the price
