Hey guys, my first post here, and having looked at some truly beautiful miniatures...i feel crestfallen!
however, i am willing to move on and improve both myself and my modelling/painting - my first q is: how do you add power swords to epic terminators?
is there a preferred way?!

Welcome to the boards, tj! (hey, you stole my initials)
As far as your painting/modelling skills are concerned, don't let the feeling of inadequacy get to you. I've gotten over it! I'm no where in the same league as some of the other members.
To answer your question, the only answer I can give is: carefully. I personally would never attempt to do that sort of conversion. I'm not nearly that talented. Good luck, though.

The easiest way would be to get hold of some of the old Space marine commanders which were equipped with a powersword and then use that. However I think a small piece of plasticard cut to shape should do just fine. Cut a small snip about 1/2 mm wide cut it to give a pointy erh.. point and then simply glue it onto the hand of the Terminator. You might want to remoce the thumb for a better fit. If you feel up to it you could raise the sword by carefully removing the arm and shoulder pad and reposition it a bit. Of course this is much easier on plastic Terminators than the new metal ones.
Cheers!

I've found that the chainswords off assaultmarines work fine when painted up as power weapons.

some of those models look awesome! | for the cyclones, I used the missile pods from the BFG space defences, the Assault cannon is part of an imperial mast array and the heavy flamer is off the bottom of a Epic Landspeeder.

I also used imperial guard parts. I used the chainsword that is held by some of the characters on the old plastic sprue, I guessits pretty hard to come by nowaday. Its not that important that it is sculpted as a power sword, since its so small I find it more important to paint in a bright colour to make it look like a power sword.
You can see my termie stand in the Epicomms competition thread, single model.

The old plastic space marine captain has a power sword with a cutlass type hand guard. This makes it really easy to hide the fact that you need to cut into the terminator's left hand abit to make it a flat surface so that the sword adheres well. The nice thing about using the space marine plastic captain is that you can also swipe his back banner off of him and attach it to your terminator sargeant/commander.

OK my termies.... assault cannons from the old plastic sentinels thunder hammer and storm sheild from old plastic chaos beastmen heavy flamers from the Epic 40k edition predator sponsons power swords from a variety of places, harliquins, SM captain, carved plastic sprue cyclones, carved plastic sprue (a real bitch, find a better way) lightning claws, carved plastic sprue (another real bitch, hence only two in my forces) chainfist, chainsword from the chaos cultist leader (only got one of them fullstop) fits good though.
see if you can spot them all in my battleforce entry.
