one of the guys from our local gaming group has made this comment about new paints:

"Just tried these out today!
Been in Warhammer World.

I have to say I am VERY impressed. Generally the standard paints (bases, layers) are same as they were. The bases are very similar to foundation, although the consistency is better (slightly thinner). The layers are great, and there are loads of different colours, which won't help someone like me, but does help those too lazy to mix their own highlights!

The "Dry" paints are AMAZING. For the record, this is a huge turn around for me. I don't know if any of you have heard me rant about drybrushing, but its a technique I completely hate, and I honestly believe it is the singlemost cause for a hell of a lot of badly painted miniatures..... that said, these new paints could change that.

If used properly, the Drys are excellent. The consistency is very very thick (thicker than liquid greenstuff), and almost slightly powdery. Think of the consistency and powdery texture of Toothpaste. Basically, you use the same technique as you always have for drybrushing (wipe almost ALL the paint off your brush), but the effect is phenominal. No more streaks, you can build up layers from a light drybrush to a heavy drybrush evenly and neatly. No paphing about getting the paint on your brush right- just dunk, give it a really good wipe and off you go. I honestly believe that, the same way Washes did a few years ago, DRYS COULD CHANGE THE WAY WE PAINT. Thats my prediction- I can tell you that for textured areas, I'll sure as hell be using these as a very useful tool for speed painting my commissions.

Shades- similar to the washes. The theory is they dont "pool" as badly as the previous set of washes, yet I've also heard them be compared closer to the old inks, which implies completely the opposite. Didn't get enough chance to look at this and come to a proper verdict to be honest.

Glazes- while my first impression was "they are selling watered down washes!?!?", after using them I've changed my mind, these are fantastic. Its very difficult to explain, something in the way the pigment settles, but they are quite bright, and really boost the vibrancy of the colour you are glazing. Used in combination with the "Drys", these things tie everything back together and make the paintjob look superb!

My final verdict- GW have almost made an idiot proof way of painting. All they need to do now is teach the retards they have as staff to do half decent painting lessons and there will be thousands of hobbyists who will be able to paint twice as well as they could before. I was in Warhammer World for just one day, and saw staff members showing people how to PAINT (not actually drybrush, just slapping it on the model in gloops) using Drys! Unbelievable. They also demonstrate the weathering powders by brushing them all over a white undercoated model (doesnt really teach anyone anything!?!?!), and not a single time today did I hear one staff member explain how to use each stage of painting with the new paints (Base, Shade, Dry, Layer, Glaze in that order) to a customer..... Just unbelievable."

The drys do sound interesting, although if you can't dry brush to start with … well you might need more help painting than using magic new paint.

I'll probably go in and get some of the Badab black and Devlan Mud replacements, whatever the hell their names are now, and paint a test swatch in comparison. I'll post pics when they're available (which is when again?)

Just an update, the local GW bunker store will have all these in on this Saturday so expect some posted pics by the end of the coming weekend...

I've tried a few.

And apart from the pots - the tab that's supposed to keep them propped open only came with two out of seven of them - I'm very impressed.

What I've heard is that they're all going to be in the new pots (the black ones) eventually, but had problems getting enough for the initial rollout - or possibly just for the examples the shops got.

OK went in and played around with the paints they had out for testing yesterday.
So the good:
I have to agree with The Friendly Water Mammal that the new foundation white is pretty damn good. 4 out of 5.

The Nulin Oil, Badab Black replacement, is pretty nice as well. It flows differently, hard to explain it. Somewhat like badab black with say a wee bit of flow enhancer would be the best way to describe it. All in all that felt like it was more an ink than wash and will be very easy to over apply; a little bit goes a long way. It has a slightly smokey look to it (or at least over white/light greys) that I like. I give it 4 1/2 out of 5.

The Camoshade is rockin. Finally a decent army green color from GW. Didn't even plan on trying it out but when I did I put it over some Administraum Grey, let it dry, then added a layer of Nulin Oil. I cannot describe just how much depth this gave. IMO 5 otta 5.

The Bad:
Grandma Wendy must very concerned about backlash and sales ATM. I was told under no circumstances was it kosher to snap pics. Once I'd been reprimanded the manager made damn sure I didn't walk out with my test swatches. WTF!?!?!

Expect in the near future the hard sale on paints. I felt like I was at a car dealership the way every 3 minutes one of the sales people in there was trying to get me to buy the uber paint set ("BUT IT COMES WITH 145 COLORS!!!!! RARAAAARRRRR I WORK ON COMMISISON!!!!!!!! GIVE ME MONIES!!!")

The Argax earthshade, Devlan Mud replacement, is a fine shade but it's NOT Dev Mud at all. Stock up now kiddies. This is a good shade and I plan on using it but I am not going to mix and match while painting the items in any unit. Anyone got a good equivalent out there?

edit:
Mephiston Red, the Mechrite red replacement, sits somewhere between Mechrite Red and Blood Red. As I've posted earlier, the Dense Red and Bloody Red from Vallejo are just about perfect matches anyways so no worries there. I like this new red actually as a heavier coat for wetbrshing over Mechrite/Dense Red first, then Blood/Bloody Red for a lighter highlights.

Thanks for feedback.

Interesting on Mephiston Red. At the moment I often mix in a little Blood Red with my Mechrite Red anyway so sounds like should get some use out of new colour.

I managed to stock up on my most used Foundation paints- the only ones I could nt get were the Devlan Mud and Badab Black washes- looks like better try ebay soon.

Thanks

James

Yeah, that's the worst news out of all of this. I was able to get some badab black, but devlan mud was out of stock at my FLGS over a week ago... The proprietor said he also scoured his distributers for mud/black and it had all been snatched up. I'm sure the "old" washes will pop up at exorbitant prices somewhere soon. Just what specialist games enthusiasts need, another black market ;D
Oh, devlan mud, we hardly knew ye :'(

I actually would have made the purchase if they'd done it in that voice :)

PS Another thread shows the new read and black shades over light grey primer. Nothing like a living example:
