Like many of you here, I have a collection of the old SM2 era drop pods and thier variants. Also like many of you they are sitting in a ziplock bag unpainted... Time for that to change methinks!
However, now that a Drop Pod is only needed for the whole formation in EA (as opposed to the older rules wher you needed lots more) I was thinking of doing small Drop Pod dioramas, where each base would have 2-3 landed pods with different pod types and a couple of Marines disembarking, etc
The Whirlwind pods I was going to do seperately on a base of 2 so that you can drop that in on the bad guys!
So my questons are a) What do you think of this idea? and b) What size should the base be? I dont want it to be too big, but it needs to fit a few pods and bits in as well to be effective.
Thanks! Tas

Hi Tas, I love it! As to size, well, a Beetleback-size base would be terrific, lots of space for scenery, pods, marines, junk etc. But it might not fit in everywhere on the table. Then again, I wouldn't drop pods where that size of base doesn't fit!

Good idea for th base V, thanks
I can just see one that has landed on a building and is surrounded by rubble...
Maybe with some retro Wicked Witch of the East's feet sticking out from under the Pod!

The largest base allowed for non-WEs is 40mm square. That's also the recommended max size for objectives, iirc.
If you go with anything larger than 40mm square, you will need to designate where you will measure from for the radius attacks just out of fairness. For example, using a 60mm round base effectively adds 1/3 to your area over just a basic model.
Also, on the negative side, keep in mind that you have to avoid enemy ZoC and difficult terrain. A big base could end up being bounced a long way if you had a bad scatter.

Good points Neal. From a modelling perspective i think a CD would be excellent as it allows for some 3 drop pods and a nice siced drop crater to be sculpted. I really like this idea. ...Almost good enough to steal... *sniggers and wanders off to workbench*

I'll give you the idea for free....on the condition that if yours looks better than mine, you have to make me a new one!
Thanks neal - I'll keep those excellent points in mind

Hi Tas,
I recommend basing them on fender washers and mounting the pod contents with small rare earth magnets so that the pod contents are interchangeable.

OK, here is a concept picture. Add a few more Marines running around in your head.
I like the retro dreadies too - they go well with the old drop pods!

They look great. My only suggestion to go along with Neal is that you may want to mount a banner pole in the direct center, or lightly draw a circle in the center, to mark where you would be measuring from for targetting and range purposes.
