Post subject:  Fluff Question

I have recently been very active buying up some EPIC goodness and intend to make the following armies:

EPIC UK : Saim-Hann

NET EPIC: Blood Angels

I will have left-over Eldar and Space Marines, enough for a couple more 4000 point armies at least. One of my ideas is to build a force based on a chapter that fought on an ice-world, or winter campaign. I have considered Space Wolves, but my regular opponent is a Wolves adherent, he also has Dark Angels so I need to go another direction.

My criteria are as follow:

Based on winter bases
2 bike formations
2 speeder formations
1 Tactical formation
1-2 scout formations
Terminators
2 Thunderhawks

Can anyone suggest a Chapter that does not use "red" the Saim-Hann, and Blood Angels will have driven the joy out of red.

This is intended for some conversions and "red relief", so anyone with a fluff idea or a suggestion on a book to read for a winter war, I would appreciate a response.

ultra marines?

one of the 40k studio armies was snow based, I think it tied it with the attack on ultramar and the defence of the polar stations.

Ironically enough the only other marine chapter I found with a background for coming from a ice planet are the crimson consuls - ruled out for being red ;D

Black Templars might look nice on snow. Ultramarines of course, although they're cliche. The flip side is they have had several 'historical' battles in Arctic conditions, notably Damnos and the Battle for Macragge. Otherwise I'd go with a green, perhaps Raptors or Sallies.

Hmmm, I have an intense dislike for the Ultramarines, but Dieter takes his to loathing, "Damn hidebound book quoting zealots...". That just might work.

I like the idea of the Raptors as well, Salamanders not so much as the thought of flames in this scale combined with the reliance on melta weaponry seems too limiting.

I am off to the Lexicanum.

ok so no....

red - as stated
grey - space wolves
Dark green - DA
Mid green - sallies
Mid Blue - smurfs

that leaves some options
dark blue - nova marines
yellow - imp fists
black - raven guard/iron hands/black templars
silver - silver skulls
gold - minotaurs/celestial lions
green/white - mentor legion (if you are happy for the white to blend in)
black/yellow - emperors scythes
mid/lt green - sons of medusa
purple - soul drinkers/hawk lords

these might help

My Ice Lords come from an ice planet (look, I was younger then)! Go on, feed my ego that little bit more. ;)

Space Wolves also come from a sort-of ice world.

So going through the options, I've narrowed the field down to the following lucky contenders:

1) Mantis Legion;
2) Raptors;
3) Sons of Medusa;
4) Ultramarines;
5) A DIY Chapter;

I am leaning towards Sons of Medusa as they'll fit what I have intended for the army but it might be fun to do number 5 as well. I guess I'll do up a few test pieces and see which I like better.

The issue was trying to find a novel or bit of fluff that mentions Space Marines engaging on a very cold planet, lots of snow cover. For that I think the Ultramarines are best, but I will keep looking.
Thanks for the help.

I did like the GW Studio painted W40K Ultramarines.

Raptors might be nice Chapter for the units you have listed. Should be easy to structure army in a way to use both Codex Astartes list and a variant SM list- from memory all those units would fit into a White Scars army list. Always good to have options.

Cheers
