Hi all, remember the slight error in the most interesting Blood Axe list produced by Nealhunt? The Vindicator was listed as an AA vehicle by error - or not? Here you go, CS - a Vindicator AA. Word of warning - many will find my new Blood Axe stuff a bit unOrky - I guess it's my own particular vision of the BAs - using a relatively clean Vindi is no less surprising than Orks who can actually spell 'strategy'..... ![]() So - here's the Vindicator straihgt away - one of the old boxy ones (afficionadoes will be interested to know that this is the one which had once been an unsuccessful SM test scheme vehicle) resplendent in 0 ah - brown. Yes, BAs do use camo colours. I guess L4 would've been a Blood Axe if he were an Ork. ![]() |

The hydraulicky bit comes of an Ork plastic battlewagon sprue, left over from To6G. The large plate up front comes from a 40K Basilisk platform (I'm working on an enclosed Basilisk conversion in WH40k); the bit shown on the photo linked to this post comes from the 40K IG vehicle accessory sprue, and is part of the searchlight. Whatsit here? An AA radar! ![]() |

All is revealed! The scenic base holds everything in position, and the plus-side is I can use the 2 vehicles in more standard roles, as a common or garden Vindicator and a well - er - a very weird Land Raider? ? ![]() |

But how does it work? Well, the Vindicator uses its dozer blade to pile up some rubble behind it, to serve as a prop. The Land Raider moves forward, tilts the ramp to an inclination not much lower than that shown. The Vindi engine is started and in a sort of controlled crash it's dragged up the ramp on the advancing Land Raider; more often than not, it's probably tilted over the side.... If the manoeuvre is successful, a beam is locked in place at the other end of the Land Raider tracks to help resist movement due to recoil when firing. The Blood Axe Vindicator AA array s notoriously innacurate, but when it does manage to hit, the weight of the shell tears the target apart. If the shell actually explodes, the airburst can be sufficient to damage aircraft flying close to the target. A reknowned feat of the system was the downing of TWO Blood Angel Landing Craft by a single shot - one direct hit, one airburst effect - in the Metatarsus campaign. ![]() |

Heh - great (or is it warped?) minds.... My second AA idea is one I won't model - I'll leave it open for anyone wanting to try it: strap the Vindi to a Gargant arm, point upwards, and voila! The Feral Orks have their own way too - they build a very big catapult, get a Squiggoth to push the Vindi onto it, and launch it up in the air. ![]() |

A point on conversions - you'll notice that my type of conversion is fast and easy, with weird roundabout ways of getting things done, mainly by just cutting up a few odds and ends and sticking them together again. This is a case to point - the Vindicators only modification is the blade added to its rear. The Land Raider is the weird bit which makes the vehicle combo - ah - work. Now if you were to ask Warmaster Nice, or Krooza, or Tuffskull, or anyone with their skill and patience to make an AA Vindicator an Ork might use, it'd have more rivets, and the gun would be cut off, pointed upwards, or replaced by a different weapon, and reattached and sculpted in place. I guess I take the lazy way out, the only good points being (1) the Heath-Robinson results and (2) good economy on green stuff! ![]() ANyway, this should explain why I havn't tried to create Obliterators for CS' epic construction workshop - I'm no sculptor, and troops are to small to use the add-bits-and-pieces approach I favour. For the record, I missed the Chaos Decimator due to a lack of wheels and (mainly) time. ![]() Hats off to the afore-mentioned (and other) real conversion people! ![]() ![]() |
