Allright; where to start...
Like Vanvlak I thought I'd start out by outlining what I plan to build.

It all began a while back with a pair of absolutely horrible scratch built Silver Towers of Tzeentch (yuck!). I was kind of stuck in a rut and couldn't seem to come up with any way of making them look good so I thought I'd ask here for some ideas. Vanvlak answered my call (this was way before the Hawaiian Hula Tower idea came up) and the result was a few concept sketches which has been sitting on my desk ever since.

I never really got to work on the towers but V's suggestions really painted  up an intersting image in my mind for a Chaos Altar.

The basic idea is to build sort of a flying piece of dirt with some kind of an altar and a sorceror on top.I want to base it on a 20 mm round slotta base, add a few pieces of the plastic ruins which came with the E40k base spures (most of you will probably have tons of those) and then build up a small piece of scenery. I haven't quite figured out how chaotic it is going to look but once it is finished the whole thing will be mounted on a flying base for a nice "supernatural" look.

The whole thing won't need that many parts:

-A single piece of plastic ruin which can be substituted by cardboard if necessary.
-A round slotta base (again it can be replaced with cardboard if you want)
-A flying base peg or thin piece of wire
-Some sand
-A bit of grass roots or lichen or something similar
-A model for the sorceror: the Tzeentch sorceror from the Chaos spure would probably be best but you could easily use an Eldar Warlock or perhaps a Librarian or Chaplain from the SM character pack painted in appropriate colours.

If I have extra time I'll probably do a few other pieces on bthe same theme: I think there was an article in Black Gobbo about "magic" terrain which I found really inspireing.

Cheers!  :)

Sounds pretty cool.  I have been thinking about scratch building Tzeentch Silver Towers.  The old ones are so tiny.  I can't wait to see the final outcome of the altar.  It should provide a good basis for building silver towers later.

Ah, interesting, a hula dancing altar, then?  :p
Sorry Warmaster, couldn't resist. Looking forward to see this.  :D  As long as I get mine done before!  :p

Good lord, what am I saying, trying to compete in productivity with the Warmaster? I'm losing it....  :{  :o

Don't tempt me V :D

Well on a more serious note: I dug out the bitz this morning so hopefully I can do a test assembly later today.

Cheers! :)

I've been goofing arround with a couple of ideas. The basic altar where the sorceror stands is more or less done. Might ad a few more details though... Anyway: since that looked sort of small for a DC3 War engine I thought a bit on how I could beef it up. I got this weird image in my head of the altar being surrounded by a couple of floating "islands with some kind of guns on them... maybe attatched to the main altar by chains or something... Well... I'll wait till tomorrow and see what happens... The main thing is to keep things simple so it is buildabe for most people.

Cheers! :)

FIRST UPDATE:

Allright. Here's a pic of what's been done so far. I suppose the flying pegs could be replaced with wire if you prefer.
The base will be build up with flock and rubble later. Also I've found a couple of plastic beads which happens to fit the pegs. I'll build the small islands arround those so they're easy to attatch once it is time to paint the stuff.
...Oh and the Warlock is just a tempoary stand in. He is about to be replaced with a sorceror of Tzentch (the Arch Heretic from the Chaos spure would also look good I think.

Cheers!  :)

Looks great so far.

Have you considered adding some dangling tentacles to the bottom of the disc?

Its all about the tentacles after all.  :laugh:

Lucky for me, the Chaos Altar and the Warp Palace for my TSons list are DC3 and DC4, respectively, so they ought to be about the same size. ?My idea was to make something that would look right on a 40mm square base.

=====

I am planning to borrow a digital camera from a friend to take some pics, but here are the two concepts I have. ?I bought enough stuff at the craft shop to do 2 of each.

1) ?A Taj Mahal style palace. ?I hit the craft store to look for some beads to make onion-shaped domes out of and another idea hit me. ?I decided to make the palace with a Persian look to it. ?I bought several packs of cylindrical beads that have a Persian look to them to stack into towers, and some ~3/4" disc-shaped beads with a near-eastern look to them. ?I alsochanged my mind on the onion domes and bought clear, bicone beads in blue (small) and yellow (large) to make crystal tower tops and palace domes and small, ring-shaped beads to set on the tower tops for more detail and a good mounting surface.

The plan is to use a 7/8" cube of floral foam as the core. ?Face it with 7/8" square pieces of 1/8" basswood. ?That will leave 1/8" notches at the corners to set the towers into. ?The basswood side panels will have 3/4" circles drilled into them for the disc beads to fit into for plenty of detail. ?The top will be left uncovered and a cone will be cut to fit the large gem-like bead for the roof.

The cylindrical beads will be threaded onto dowels to make sure they stay straight when glued. ?The ring-beads will be glued on top to add more detail and a place to seat the tower crystals. ?Then they will be glued into the corners of the main palace building.

The base will likely be a 40mm base with floral foam mounted underneath to look as if the whole thing was ripped from the ground.

The any exposed floral foam will be painted to prevent it from melting, then the whole thing will be primed. ?The details will be painted. ?The sockets for the gemstone beads will be painted bright silver to help them shine, and the stones will be glued into place, giving it a yellow crystal dome in the middle of the palace and blue crystal domes on the towers.

2) ?An Aztec-style ziggarat. ?Pretty basic design. ?Cut a 1 1/4" square, a 1" square and a 3/4" square out of 1/8" basswood. ?Stack and glue. ?Use a craft knife to score "blocks" into the surface. ?Cut a channel down each side to fit a zip tie in order to make steps.

Use extra pieces of basswood to make Aztec style stone-henge arches (I've blanked on the name - 2 monoliths topped by a third) ?at the bottom of each staircase and one on top with an altar in front. ?The edges should be easy to round off and texture with a knife and sandpaper.

Mount it on the same kind of 40mm square base with floral foam "stone" dangling underneath.

One effect of using the floral foam underneath is that it should be easy to mount on a flying stand by just pressing it in. ?I may need to use something to firm it up inside so it doesn't crush, though. ?I'm certainly open for ideas on that.

====

I promise I'll get pics as soon as possible. ?I already have a friend lined up to let me borrow his camera.

====

Edit:  And now after reading about the Throne of Judgement pices in Vanvlak's thread, I think I'll have to add in some giant braziers to each.
