OK, for my ToSG force, I need two jump pack Chaplains. With my current budget, I can't afford to get the SM Character pack to get them that way, so I'm looking to convert them off the current Assault Marines that come in the box.

Any suggestions on how to go about this, or would I be best off just painting one guy in each detachment in Chaplain colours?

A blob of green stuff can do wonders wth the right paint job! :)

I agree. Make a neww head from GS. Just add a small ball and press two eyes and a mouth in with a needle. You can then press the sides a bit to stretch the face slightly. If you want it to look even more like a skull make one extra small hole in the middle where the nose bone is placed.
I'd also replace the chainsword with some kind of a mace. It should be fairly easy if you just stick on a piece of plactic rod which you've trimmed a bit into shape.

Cheers! :)

WmN's suggestions are the way I'd go too, if you have an ordinary Chaplain you could chop his mace off and give it to the assault marine.

Thats what I did for all my Chaplain "conversions". Quick and easy.

Unfortunately, if I'm sticking to the TOSG rules, I cannae really do that ;)

Time to break out the GS, I think :)

I disliked the oversized command figures so much that I just converted the standard marines. Unfortunately this was not an easy process and I would not recommend it - especially sticking jumpacks on the backs of captains/sergeants.  However, it is a process that only has to be done once!  I also admit that once you are playing a game, you don't even notice that the command figures are oversized!  Nonetheles because the most characteristic feature of chaplains and librarians is the colour scheme... they are very easy to proxy!  For a chaplain just paint black with a white helmet and chapter specific shoulder pad, for a librarian blue armour and chapter specific should pad. Ir you feel adventerous add a staff in place of chainsword (a bit of wire) and the character will really stand out.

This is generally true, however you do get the odd complication with some Chapters, Librarians for Ultras or Chaplains for Templars as examples, here some more imaginative solution is required.
