Post subject:  C&C requested - 6mm WW2 winter test piece

Hi all,

I'm looking for comments & critiscisms on a test piece I finished yesterday. I'm painting a very large 6mm Soviet army project, and plan to do a quarter of it in a winter scheme whilst the rest is in more usual summer colours.

I've done my first test piece. As I always do after that, I have been looking at it for 24 hours, but somethings bothering me.

A couple of notes:
Beacuse of the size of the project (300+ pieces... to start with...) Everything is speed-painted, so its not going to be amazing.

The basing - I know where I cocked up here. Initially I did the proper bit of mixing in the snow with glue to apply it. Then I decided I wanted more depth to the snow, but rather than mixing it upo, I just sprinkled it over the still-wet snow mix on the front section of the base - ROOKIE ERROR! :-[ All snow will be properly applied from now on... :-[

Anyway, that said, something's still bothering me. Might be the speed-weathering. Might be the base colour. Might be Me. I cant put my finger on it - can you?

Thanks for looking! :)

P.S. Model is a Soviet T70 from GHQ

The white areas look a little undefined. Perhaps a wash to bring out more of the detail?

I'd also stipple in more color over the larger whitewashed areas, especially on the turret, to break them up.

Other than those two points, it looks really good. ;)

Looks pretty damn good to me TBH.

A couple of things stick out for me, but I'm picky about these sorts of things so take it with a grain of salt...

Firstly, I think the white wash looks too heavy IMO. Ghudra has it right that the details are a little lost. Example for me is the wheel??? on the rear engine deck. The white really swallows the detail and makes it look like the model has been painted over a few times. I dunno, if you're going for a speed paint perhaps this shouldn't be an issue but it's how I see it.

The second point is far less important IMO, but the shrubbery ("Ni!") ;D for winter should be browning off. It's too green right now for me.

The rust effect looks great though. Wish I could get my rust effects to do that.

I think that the snowfall on the ground feels too large for the scale of the model. The way it coats the bushes and ground feels too thick or inconsistent with the volume of the foliage. Second I think there is too much of it. While it might be accurate to have that much, it doesn't make the vehicle pop very well. I think some frozen muddy areas around the tank with little show would help you out there.

Last, you should probably add some kind of discoloration to the whitewash on the engine vents at the back. They look too pristine compared to the rust on the rest of the tank. (and the barrel seems to droop pretty badly).

Great points all round, but the winner is..

Far less important in your eyes but the second I read it I realised that was it. I simply made the same bases I had done for the rest of my army, then added snow, but that's whats been bothering me. The shrubs would have died back and the grass would be brown at best after a russian winter under snow!

Right, plain mud and snow base test needed... Thanks Dobbsy!
I'll also try a heavier / darker wash and see if that adds further definition without adding paint time or changing the overall tone of the tank too much.

I'll also darken up engine vents on future models- good catch Vaaish. New I could rely on you guys - thanks! :)

Agree about the foliage - should be on the brown side. Also, I think it would be better to have more of the whitewash rubbed off the deck and top of the turret, especially around the hatches.

Second test piece done. Missed the mark with the weathering. Its trash. Take three will be on the workbench this evening.... I haven't worked this hard on a simple scheme in years....I think I found my nemesis >:D

Dunno if this helps or not, but I remember seeing a GHQ tutorial on winter camo in which they used a corner of the packing foam to paint the original hull color (sparsely) over the whitewash...

Work on the winter scheme has been put back on the cold plate for the moment, work on the summer scheme troops is ploughing ahead.

I've just updated my 6mm Soviets gallery with pics of some more of the armoured units in my collection.

Let me know what you think. They need unit markings added, but I'm getting the bulk work done first before I indulge myself in details!

Looking at the 130 units I've just undercoated, I would hope there'll also be another update soon ;)

Cheers,
Paul
