I know I have an Imperial Fists painting blog that needs urgent attention, however unless you have been hiding under a rock for the past year, you will know that I have devoted all my epic time to the World Eaters.

At a point where we are about ready to complete the list, it was prudent to start painting up my vast collection of models for the World Eaters force. Now I have this Nikon D80 with a 60mm 1:2.8G lens (whatever that means) and I just had to try it out.

So I just thought I would start the blog off with pictures of the various steps to which I have got to.

Khorne Berserkers: I am trying to get together 64 stands of these guys with 1 of those formations doubling up as 2 Chosen retinues. I am onlyy about 5 Stands short of making this a reality. The camera takes a really close pic does it not?

And here is a mini painted about 2 times with watered down Red Gore, and then given a wash of Badab Black

I really must learn how to use a camera and understand light....

I then went over with Shining Gold

Note: I have done quite a few tests with Brass colours yet nothing was as appealing as Shining Gold. Even when washed with Black, it was a superior colour

Now I know I am missing a few steps here however I went over the mini with a heavy wash of Badab Black as I wanted to dull the red to be a crusted and 'old blood' type appearance. I was not interested in the bright red or 'clean' look and wanted these guys to represent the bringers of death that they are.

After the heavy wash I picked out the black bits.

The Chainsword teeth I picked out with Codex Grey and tipped with skull white. On these I then washed again with Badab Black, yet on other ones I lined Badab Black along the point where the teeth meet the blade right down the sword to keep more of the white tips.

I am doing another 8 stands at the moment and then I will base them all - 16 stands - sheesh!.

For the base I am thinking to :

1. Glue down the rocks and gravel (normal GW sandy rock stuff)
2. Paint it black
3. Highlight with some grey (probably 2 tones)
4. Stick down in some places Gameforce Nine Foundation Dirt Flock (GF9 92008)

The grass is a darker green than static grass and the whole base being darker than the Berserkers should really keep the brooding look of these units.

Hoping to get a lot done of these two formations this weekend - as long as nothing changes

Cheers....

I can recommend vallejo black lava stone paste for this  :agree: I was unsure about buying what i could make easily myself, but its so much less hassle  :)

Looking forward to seeing more, make sure you keep high-res copies of your pics   :agree: As those are just what are needed  :)

No problem. I will. The only one I messed up was the completed Berserker but I can always take that pic again

Cheers dude

Looking great so far Frogbear; the washing is working well, of course when i did it I made the mistake of doing this AFTER I'd done their bases when I did mine...

Looking forward to seeing this some together any-hoo

Ouch

Painting minis that are already based. I guess it is alot darker around where the minis are when you finish   :)

Excellent 'zerkers FB!

Unfortunately, I don't have a bunch of those figs, so I'm going to be using the generic Chaos warriors, but in suitable colors, they ought to fill the bill.

I too prefer a more realistic looking red vs. "Hey, I can see you a half mile away in fog" bright red. I am probably going to go with a Beastial Brown base (drybrushed over base black), then Blood Red, then washes and inks. I'm still deciding on my Brass color, but I like what you've done a lot.

Looking forward to seeing these guys based.

beware the Scorpion King...  ;)

Make sure you post some pics. If you have them in hi res, even better as we may be able to use them for a modelling guide  :)

So get moving you!

I think I finally clicked on this one.

It will be good to see. You are making a good built up to it, so expectations are high

FB have you thought about Devlan Mud wash for the red at all? I haven't tried it myself yet but if you want crusty old blood I know brown actually makes a good shader for red. Plus it might actually make your gold a bit more brassy as well

dobbsy

I will give that a try on some others after these.

I must say that I had a very good look over yours and Warmaster Nices models before I began. It is always good to look over what people have done and see what you can take away from their examples. I trialled about 7 different designs till I decided to stick with the one I have now.

Cheers dude   :agree:

I can second Dobbsy's recommendation. I'm working up my 3rd Krieg company (the "Reds") and I like the brown-ish tone it provides. If I can get a shot today I'll post for you.

Thanks for the kind words ulric

I did not highlight the Shining Gold for the pure fact that i did not want it to stand out too much. It was important to me that it remained dull as I wanted the warriors to be grim and nasty rather than polished.

I may try it on a Skull Lord. We shall see.

Cheers...   :D
