Hi guys,

Up until recently I've been using a Royal and Langnickel 20/0 4200R brush for fine detail work. It seems as though these have now been discontinued as I can't find them anywhere.

I've purchased some others to use as replacements but the quality seems to be poor or just doesn't suit how I paint. Can anybody recomnd me a decent fine detail brush?

Windsor & Newton Series 7 - Size 1. My all-time favourite brush!

Also check out the W&N Sceptre series brushes. They are a sable/synthetic blend that are less pricey and work very well for Epic Scale painting.

The Lost & the Dipped

I use Francheville red sables - very cheap compared to W&N and do a pretty good job too. I use sizes 20/0, 5/0 and 1/0s. The 20/0s are particularly excellent for detail work and the tips hold for ages if you look after them. Don't go with synthetic as I find the tips always tend to curl. Most synthetics I've used are now used for dry brushing.

Windsor and Newton Galleria size 00 and size 1 are my current favourites - nice brushes. I also have a pair of size 2 round and flat Abteilung (MiG) brushes. I also use a GW drybrush for drybrushing, bit expensive though. Anyone recommend a cheaper, better drybrush?

Tamiya HF Series Pointed Brush - (Ultra Fine)
Probably the best brush I've ever owned-no curling and great paint flow. They sell a low cost bundle with that and the flat #0 and #2. Good deal.

I've been using a Winsor & Newton Artists Water Colour Sable 00 Round for most of my heavy painting and blending these days with a Windsor & Newton Sceptre Gold II 000 Sable/synthetic hybrid for ultra fine details and highlights.

Previous to that I'd been using American Painter 10/0 for fine details but over time the tips just kept bending making the brush unusable. The sable fixes that mostly with good care but it's a bit harder to find a good tip and the sable/synthetic seems to hold out longer with the tip but it's showing signs of bending.

I have been using JAVIS 5/0 for detail work, well priced and avalible from most hobby stores I was using the GW range
and would purchase a few when buying paint every now and again but the found the brushes lost hair to easliy on th efine ones.

I have been very happy with the javis for price and detail work

I bought a pricey Newton and Windsor series 7 size 0, and it sucks. It keeps splitting into two points. Bad luck I guess, but it makes GW’s “standard brush” look like very good value (I’ve had great experiences with those, believe it or not).

Always test a brushes ability to hold a point before you buy it.

I prefer Winsor and Newton University Series (synthetics) I have never had any luck with acrylic paint and sable and/or sable/synthetic blends. Luckly for me the synthetics are also cheaper. I never leave them in a water pot, and store them upright and don't have much issue with the tips bending.

The only issue I have ever had with sable and sable/synthetic is the paint doesn't seem to load up on the brush nor flow off the brush well for me.

I was very happy with GW's brushes also, then i bought one and it split into 3 tips right away, got another and it split into two. Finally got one that's not great but it does the job. GW's standard is so broad it's hit or miss really.

Anyway, i'm currently using a nice 'big' kolinsky sable № 2 for most things. At size 2 and under i find the size of the brush matters less than the quality of the tip. Smallest i own is a 00 and i've never even taken its cap off.

Got a proarte № 5 for drybrushing, thought the make is meaningless as it's been abused so much over the years it now looks matted dog hair, the area of the brush that is still usable is probably only № 3 sized now.
