I've been wondering if our community's big enough to support a monthly painting challenge.

Each month's task would be pretty small, like "One unit" or "One vehicle" or perhaps something more open-ended like "Rusty" or "Angry!".

At the end of the month, we'd all vote the best, and the winner would get to pick the topic/theme for the next month's painting challenge.

I've seen this kind of thing run successfully on several forums, and although we do have Epicomp, that's only once a year.

Anyways, any interest?

Sounds fun, i like the idea of having it as an open ended 'theme'.

Well if you won, you'd get to pick the theme. :-)

I reckon if we get ~10 people who are interested, it'll be worth doing.

I'd be in. One model/vehicle a month is all I seem to have time for nowadays anyway. For themes like "angry" or "frustrated", would it be OK to post a picture of my face instead? My daughter would love to paint it.

Didn't somebody try something like this with chaos rhino's last year? Not really sure what became of it.

No idea.

Something as specific as "Chaos Rhino" would be quite exclusive though, so wouldn't get many entries.

This has always been my favourite type of painting event & I've run a lot of them for local groups over the years, using things like the 5th edition warhammer skinks or 3rd ed plastic marines.

Taking something which is a regular, and frequently seen as "boring" model and seeing what a dozen different painters can do with it. Something like a single plastic rhino, or land raider which are easy & cheap to get ahold of for the few that dont already have them & move on from there perhaps?

I'd suggest they dont have to be display models. You can use it as a way to demonstrate how you paint your massed ranks one month and then push yourself next time around.

Even better would be if each entry has to include a paint list at the least, or a description of the techniques used.

Shows off different painting styles and techniques far better than any other "competition" as you can directly compare results.

Don't mean to waffle or Hi-Jack the concept at all. Just count me In if quick paint styles are allowed with the occasional silly piece! :)

Aye, that'd be cool.

I've seen monthly events with topics like "Use only 2 colours" or "speedpaint" etc.
Interesting stuff that you'll tend to learn from.

The "which is best?" vote is just a way of picking the next topic, it could just as easily be set by an event organiser.

I was interested in that challenge, but I think the category was too confined. Simply saying "a Rhino" would give the opportunity for the converters to play to their hearts content, but also those of us with little painting time to throw something together with a spare model.

Colour me interested - and I agree, a broad vague theme like 'angry' is better than a proscriptive one.

Count me in. One model a month, I can manage.
Just don't let me call the shots. I'd come up with stuff like 'titan camouflaged as a haystack' or 'removable glider wings for a tank' or 'large building which is also a vehicle'.

I've built two of these three, incidentally..... :)

I'd be interested, though I wouldn't be able to commit to one a week. So being able to dib in and out of running challenges would be good. Also I'd say avoid scratchbuilt/rare stuff specifically as it may put people off. Stick with things like "Paint a rhino", "Paint a single fighter aircraft", etc and it should be winner.

Also, it'd be good to set specific challenges or techniques to use, though they could be optional. E&C mentioned about speedpaint and others, but you could expand it by, say, using the following themes;

- Use a wet pallette
- Wet blend
- No drybrushing
- Weathering
