Has anyone used tamiya or vallejo game colors?
these are the paints that stores around me sell (in addition to games workshops) and i was wondering which is the best? ive only used games workshops.

i can get tamiya paints for 1.89 for 10 ml, but the warstore sells vallejo game colors for 2.79 for 17 ml and game workshops for 1.80 for 12 ml.

thanks

I used Tamiya paints years ago when making various model tanks, and they were okay then.  I haven't used them on GW materials though, or recently.  Cant see why there'd be any problems.  As long as they are acrylic.

Well, Vallejo are what a lot of painters use. They have a range which is so similar to GW that you can easily find the GW colour just by looking at the name. If you can find a regular supply, then I would go with them. I would use Vallejo if I could get them often enough to rely on them!

Are the Tamya paints oil-based? They are thicker, and really for historical miniatures where shading and highlighting are usually a minimum. They are too thick for my use.

I have heard that Vallejo's range is better then GW's but I havn't had the chance to try them out myself.
Does anybody know where to get hold of some (the full range, not just a few colours) in the UK?

Tamiya paints are pretty good.  They have some very vibrant colors.

They are made to use in airbrushes and are not waterbased.  However, they are compatible with water, so you can use it to thin them while you are working.  I believe they use an alcohol (based on smell and water compatibility).

I'm sure you would get the best results using their thinner.  Based on the fact that thinned oil paints make really good washes because of the very low surface tension, I bet the Tamiya thinned down would do likewise.

I don't think they are that thick starting out, but they do dry and thicken quickly,  It's probably because their solvent is more volatile than water.  In any case, you need to be careful about clumping and your brushes getting sticky.

I hope that helps.  I've never used Vallejo.

Not necessarily.  "Acrylic" just means that is the vehicle.  The pigment and the solvent just have to be compatible.  There are a lot of acrylic polymers, and they can use different solvents.

Also, I forgot to mention, but I think it's obvious, the stickey-as-it-dries makes them unsuitable for drybrushing.

There's a paint life beyond GW's paints? I think a problem is marketing these guys. If it wasn't for this, I really wouldn't give them a second look. Where can you find these guys?

Tamiya is available in serious hobby stores in the model sections.  IIRC, they specialize in military colors (browns, greens, grays, etc), but they have a good selection of other colors for people building model cars and stuff.  Try looking near the airbrushes, as they make their paints to work in them.

You might also find them in an art supply store, but probably only if it has a really good selection.
