I struggle to base neatly once figures are finished. So I tend to glue fine sand to the bases before I have even undercoated infantry. For vehicles the same except I will often do base separately and then attach to vehicle once almost finished. If I want temperate zone terrain then I paint the bases with Calthan Brown and drybrush up with lighter browns (Scorched Brown and Bestial Brown IIRC). I then add some modelling flock. If I want desert zone terrain then I paint the bases with Tau Sept Ochre and drybrush up with Desert Yellow and Bleached Bone. I then add a little modelling flock. It would be easy to do the same sort of thing for Urban terrain with Adeptus Battlegrey and Codex Grey. (I like using foundation paints as 1st coat because they go so well over black undercoat). What sort of thing were you thinking of? Cheers James |

I tend to do as you do and base first before any paint is applied. But these Marines came already undercoated when i got them. In my eagerness i began painting them, i am hoping i can base them without too much pain! I think im going to go with something light, so maybe a desert theme for the bases. Ill probably follow what you put above WI. One thing i am curious about is transfers for models this size, mainly the tanks. Id love to add some decals to the Rhino's/Hunters/Razorbacks, but not sure if there are transfers for models this small? |

I have a similar dilemna with some Ork infantry based with old style flock. I am going to have to repaint over them to match my desert basing. I have been putting it off as don't want to risk mucking them up. That's why I prefer basing as early as possible as I am a messy painter- that way i have a chance to paint over the drybrushing where covers the figure. |
