Hi. Does anyone know if the SM scouts and terminators in the SG section of GW's site plastic or metal? I'll need some, and I have a strict "plastic only" policy :-) Thanks! |

AFAIK, the only plastic still in the SG range are the basic boxes, i.e. they're metal. SG |

They're metal. The only plastic Epic models currently sold by GW are the core infantry boxes (Chaos Horde, Eldar Warhost, Imperial Guard Infantry Company, Ork Warband, Space Marine Battle Company). All the rest are metal. |

Both those models used to be plastic though, so you can hunt them down in plastic second hand. |

Boo!!! Thanks guys. I have to sort out some old metal stuff I want to get rid of, and then I'll have a go at the trade forum then. |

Just out of curiosity, why the aversion to metal? It's my favourite medium for miniatures. I definitely prefer it over plastic. |

eBay is your best bet to pick up plastic scouts and terminators, as well as plastic characters. Try to get the Epic 40k era sprues, as they had them all. |

The quality of the current EA metal recasts of plastic originals are a pretty bad quality TBH. There's plenty of metal flow problems where the pressure injected plastic is much more clearly defined. Plastics are also much less likely for the paint to chip off, and finally plastic is much easier to convert...Well in my opinion anyway ![]() Now if we're talking vehicles it is a different matter, but at least I think it holds true for inantry. |

The terminators are actually pretty good in metal. There really isn't any difference in quality. |

I prefer the metal scouts myself as it's very easy to bend the arms to new positions so each squad member can look different, which involves lots more cutting and gluing and faffing with plastic ones. Hadn't noticed any quality difference though, might have to look at that, not that the scouts models are anything to write home about anyway. |

The main reasons for my aversion to metal are the fact that plastic is lighter, less likely to be damaged if it falls or during transport and the paint doesn't get chipped. To this can be added the ease of painting and conversion. I'm coming back to wargaming after 10 years of break, and I cannot be bothered anymore with all the old pinning, chipping and damage problems. As a rule of thumb, my minis should be able to fall from the gaming table without suffering any damage. And, to be honest, setting an arbitrary rule to myself opens the door to lots of interesting scratchbuilding and conversion projects. I'm not sure about resin, as yet. I ordere some FW eldar tanks but they didn't arrive yet, so I'm still clueless about it. EDIT: I want to point out that my choice has nothing to do with the actual quality of the model themselves. |

Other than glass, or, perhaps ice, resin tends to be the most fragile substance miniatures can be made of. Not bad for large "solid" pieces, but brutally breakable for thin pieces... like infantry or gun barrels. And welcome back to wargaming! ![]() |

yeah, i have all the F.W. eldar stuff myself and it's beautiful. but if you don't care abouot the quality as much as durabilty, go with s.g. stuff. |

The only issue with the FW stuff is that the designer left off the canopy frames, for some reason, so either you get an unbroken expanse of glass, or have to freehand them in. SG |

To my surprise, though, painting the frames freehand isn't all that hard. I'm not very good at freehand stuff, but I actually found the blank canopies easier to paint than those with the frames sculpted on (and I think they came out looking all right). |
