Ive just been getting into 6mm gaming, and am currently in the process of buying different manufacturer's stuff to use for my IG army. I have a whole slough of Space Marines and Orc models as well, most of them not based. I am not 100% sold on the long strips that the infantry are mounted on...they seem unwieldy to me, and not efficient. I did a search and didnt find anything, so apologies if my search-fu is weak...do you have a preference towards one type of infantry bases or another? Do you prefer the GW-style very long and very narrow, a square of any given dimension, or maybe a slightly smaller rectangle/square variant? I plan on putting 3 models per base, to make what I have (and will be buying) go further. Bonus points if you can point me in the direction of a manufacturer's specific product, but making bases out of plasticard is fine too... Thanks! |

Really anything is possible with the base rules. 3 per base is very sparse, perhaps keep at 3 for a command stand but have 4 troops (a modern fireteam) and some scenary of the base of your choice. If you don't want to make your own some people have liked Flames of War bases (and they have a variety of sizes for infantry, tanks and SHT's). |

I have adopted the convention that the 'original' epic bases (20mmX20mm) are for Line and Support Troops, and the "new" epic bases (10mmx40mm) are used for close combat specialists... But: I have a -lot-of the old bases, and a very few of the new, so there's that. As far as Suppliers, you might take a look at Litko http://www.litkoaero.com/products.php http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=167639 Flames of War Bases would work well, I'm sure; The Small bases are (32mm x 25mm), Medium bases (50mm x 32mm) Large bases(64mm x 50mm). Might be a bit sparse with only three figs, though... http://www.thewarstore.com/paintsbrushesbases.html |

I think it depends on the army. Hex/roud for rids, square for orks, strip/line for guard etc. |

I've never thought about  using round bases for Infantry before, but after seeing a well done example: http://epic40k.googlepages.com/tyranids I'm thinking about rebasing my Tyranids to this convention: Coins would seem too heavy, and might damage the delicate 'nid infantry.... What would one use for round infantry bases? {Edit} The Biggest Problem I can see is that round bases may, potentially, under certain circumstances: make certain base-to-base close combat situations more difficult to evaluate & resovle |

Im not sure why round bases didnt occur to me either. Any drawbacks to using rounds for infantry in Epic? What about basing conventions in other games? I figure if I pour $200 into an Epic army, I might as well be able to use it for other games, too... |

Last night I played Epic with a friend. He has square bases and I was using the more modern "strip" versions. In one situation my Terminators charged his termies. He ended up with 2 bases of Terminators in contact with each of mine because his square bases allowed them to have a smaller front than mine. I paid for it! I think I know what Im going to go with on this one... ![]() |

@Kealios a maximum of 4 close combat opponents/stand should solve that problem @ all, particularly Otter what about bases with dead soldiers to replace destroyed stands one for eldar, space marines, orks ect, greetings ulric |

Very nice tread ![]() For the Spudd i would prefer the Spuddin the middle of a square base and two crew behind the gun and 0-1 crew to either side of it. |

Hadn't thought of attacking narrow edge forward. Makes sense but I think it looks quite silly! Good idea though. Until I get new bases, that'll have to do! |

Some armies like tyranids look great when based in single column. Likewise some WWII 'marching' infantry look good in column! |

Onyx, I'd think it would be the other way around. Blocks allow the CC guys to get in close without stringing themselves edgewise, and the line infantry and support troops can exert a wider Zone of Control, as well as stacking nicely behind walls and whatnot for cover. |

I usually pick one or the other per army. My Squats, Orks and Slann are based on squares, while IG, (most of) Chaos, Eldar and Necrons use strips. Orks look good en mass on squares to my mind, while shooty Elves and Necrons look good in skirmish line. Chaos and IG are on strips for purely pragmatic reasons...most of the plastics I used were E40K/E:A vintage and I just couldn't have been stuffed filing back all those circles to fit in the smaller holes on the square bases, even though I think Chaos would look better on squares. |
