Hi guys,

With my Titan Legio (War Griffons) well under way I wanted to take the chance to start a second guard army and what a better accompaniment than tech guard / skitarii.

I have a lot of new guard models (thanks FW for your dramatic U-turn!) as well as a lot of old guard models (bikers, jump troops, robots)

My plan is to make 1 unified army that can double up as both forces.

I have yet to get all my ideas fleshed out and that is where you guys hopefully will save the day.

1 idea is to use my jump troopers as storm troopers (kinda like the idea of them jump -packing out of their valkyries) and use bikers as rough riders.

I am toying with the idea of red for my skitarii / guard with grey and red conrast for units such as jump troops and bikers. This can then be carried over to their transports - valkyries with grey body and red wings or vice versa. However I am also quite taken with the idea of doing up Commissar Cain (with salamander scout) leading a platoon of Valhallans (green white camo) and maybe use the jump troopers as a platoon of Harakoni Warhawks (black / desert brown). I have 2 formations of jump troopers so I could do 1 of each.

At this point in time I am just collecting together all my models and some ideas. I still have to finish my cobalt blue / grey guard, my Thousand Sons, Luna Wolves and Titans so have a lot to get on with before I touch these guys.

So I open this up the the forum  :D . Any ideas?

Personally I'd go for dark red, with black, metal and gold (it's what I plan on - I've decided in the end to go for a Martian army). That is actually pretty much a popular inquisitorial colour scheme too, so some models could be used that way too.

Id go red with grey cammo on vehicles, although the grey with red contrast scheme sounds very interesting - maybe do some test minis? I did my tech guard tanks pure red with some white detailing and regretted it :sigh:(cant seem to find pics of my vehicles tho).Don't really know enough about old IG modles to comment on them.

Personally I'd go for a slightly darker, less bright and more realistic red than that (with thinned down brown and black washes to look a bit more grimey) and also use a pale cream for the edging (as on the Inquisitor Tech Priest), rather than pure white. Bright red and pure white looks a little too Santa Claus like for my tastes. That said great painting on the little guy!

I entirely agree! - i just cant be bothered to repaint em :vD  the hoods don’t help the santa look either.

Those black tanks look cool, although wouldn't dark mech tanks be black as well?

Guys thanks for the responses. This is what I needed - some creative discussion to point me in the right direction.

For the tanks I was thinking of dark grey middle section with red sides.

Agree with all that a dark red would be best, foundation red with a watered down brown/black mix perhaps.

Will try out a few test schemes and post up.

As for bases for my titans, was toying with martian red sand to contrast against the grey/yellow of the 'griffons.

How often would a Martian army actually fight on Mars though? It's got to be one of the two most well defended planets in the galaxy, in terms of fleet, orbital and ground assets. The Necrons threw a load at them to land a ship for The Dragon, but it wouldn't surprise me if that'd been the only invasion of Mars since the Heresy.

Could well be other planets with a similar red-ish ground though, and maybe Mars fighting forces might slightly preferentially be sent to these warzones?

Yes ... I plan on doing my Skats in various shades of Martian desert Tans ...  :alien:
