Hi all

OK. I have decided to start painting an Imperial Fists force. I have little skill at painting and have never painted Epic minis before so please be patient with me.

I have started by doing some intensive research into the Imperial Fists. The colour schemes are amply supported by this link:

http://z11.invisionfree.com/THE_PHALANX ... wtopic=200

Bolter and Chainsword have the same yet you need to login to access that site...

Now that I have the colour schemes and the history from Index Astartes I-II-III-IV & Insignium Astartes Created by Red Elf and GW (Compiled by Phillyslimm), I have decided to throw my hat in the ring. I will start off with the 2nd company.

Before I start, I must say that I do miss the old Citadel 250ml Spray Cans when they had the different colours. All I have is bleached Bone and Goblin Green, none of which are too helpful for these marines. I think I may look into investing in the GW (or other hobby brand) Spray Gun similar to what can be seen here :  Paint Gun from GW. This would save alot of time in the future for the initial yellow base coat.

So on with the painting blog then....

I have been throwing up whether to place the minis on their bases (square bases, not the rectangles), or whether to paint them from the sprues.

After a little thought, I decided to try off the sprue. So after a white spray undercoat, I am starting off with 4 bases worth of tacticals and 3 rhino as below:

I will do a character stand separately for the squad and another tactical to make a full squad once I get a technique or colour that I like.

I decided to cut the sprue more so as I can get to the minis easier with the paint.

The rhinos have also been blue-tacked to some chop sticks for the same reason.

I went over all the models with a number 3 brush and Sunburst yellow. There were times where I mixed it with more water on the brush, yet I found that it was better to get the colour on while keeping as much detail available as possible. Like I said, I think I will be looking to get the spray gun for future base colours such as this.

From here, I am going to let them dry and then place on Gryphonne Sepia Citadel Wash

you need to be careful with the sepia wash, if it goes on too thick you will get puddles of brown and if you don't fix it fast it will leave a ridge as it drys.

And do you really mean "Paining" in your title... surely it isn't THAT bad :)

Thanks Vaaish.

Fixed the heading.

I will make sure I water down that wash as well.

Hope to get another update here after the wash dries....

Date: 01/01/09 - Afternoon

I liberally placed the Gryphonne Sepia Citadel Wash onto the models with a ragged drybrush (size 3) and took off any excess build ups with a combination of a dry brush and a wet brush. At this point (after it dried) I would think that these are perfectly acceptable to leave as is for main armour and just paint the guns, and your done. If you wanted a quick Imperial Fists Force, then this is a quick way and it does not look too bad with that rich yellow that you get from the wash after it dries.

I decided to break out the Sunburst yellow again and provide some quick stripes to upraised areas as detailed in the photos below.

I have attempted to also give the tactical marines green eyes (size 10/0 brush) with some average results. This is not an issue however as I still have to give a final highlight to these areas with a yellow/white mix so I will be able to white-line the areas around the eyes and clean up the blots. Hopefully I will get onto this and the weapons tomorrow.

Note: The camera appears to make the yellow alot lighter than what it is on the mini. They do have a richer tone which I hope to bring out in possibly another wash at a later time

For the detailing, I am looking into making my own transfers/decals for the shoulder pads. I am not confident in free-handing the designs at this moment. Should be interesting to see how the time that will be placed into this will justify the end result.

I will look at the minis again in the daytime to make sure that they are not as yellow as the camera appears to be making them. Then again, I could always use the wash again.....

In general I think youre doing it right, so your models will probably look great in the end.

A few of things that you might consider as you continue:

* I personally dont think its worthwhile to paint their eyes, unless you do it uber-perfectly. And if you do it uber-perfectly it still is hardly noticeable, as the eyes are soooooo tiny. But again thats my humble opinion.

* When you do the weapons Id recommend first painting them black and then highlighting with metal. That gives you a very nice and effective blacklining effect. In my opinion this works better for these small minis than a metal coat and ink wash.

* Put great care when you do the bases. For epic infantry, the bases are often more important than the minis themselves.

Good work so far and good luck!

Thanks Brother-Captain Parzval. I just read your post as I was going to post this.

Notes taken, and already applied - I am unsure just how effectively however    :;):

Ok. I have been pretty lazy yet here are some of the jobs I did about a week ago:

On the Rhinos I am trying to keep them as Adeptas Astartes as possible:

Nice tactical symbol on the Rhinos.

Today I decided to get off my rear end and get some action on the first three squards of the 3rd Company (Tac marines).

I have had to give up the idea of making my own decals for the shoulder pads as it would be too time consuming and I doubt that it would have provided much benefit. Hence I have gone free-hand on everything.

Below are my results so far. I have to say that the Tac marines are a real time spender!!  I do not mind the rhinos however. They are quite a calming thing to paint.

Right Shoulders: Tactical Symbol       Left Shoulder: Imperial Fists Symbol (circle with a dress)

Red trimmings for the 3rd Company

The Rhinos - Notice the markings and the numbering (rhinos 1 - 3)

And the lot so far:

Next on the agenda are the other tactical bases, characters (may be using magnets for these - stay tuned), and some vehicles. Also have 10 heavy weapons in there to place one on each tactical stand.

I am short on a few of the razorbacks I want at the moment so I will leave them for undercoating for another day. Eventually I will have 7 Razorbacks for this company's 2nd group of tactical marines (squads 4-6).

The rhino's pictured below will be made for the 2nd or 5th company. This is a decision for another day.

That's a really good start. Some nice freehand on the shoulder pads.

Thanks yet they are not that great. I went for some time saving rather than the awesome quality I see here from others. It should be right till I get an actual painted force for the marines.

Future projects can be art jobs..

Cheers...

Nice work!

I look forward to seeing what you do with bases for those marines.
