Fastest way of painting Ultramarines?

Okay you speed painters out there.

I'll be back in London with limited painting time, so my question is how to get the chapter finished sharpish?

I'd like to use the current company colours. Model wise in general the latest gear is used by the battle companies and earlier models used for reserves and armour pool.

For instance the Battle Companies use Mk7 marines and the reserve companies Mk6. 4th edition stuff is with the battle and 1st with the reserve, with the rest spanning the gap.

Pride of place is the 1st company in power armour, all made from metal epic marines, of which I should have enough now. Might get this pro painted. Also don't know whether to use 1st edition metal rhinos or 4th edition ones. Suggestions?

Incidentally this is the 2nd time I am painting the chapter, some of you may remember my tale of woe when the whole lot got nicked in GW Beckanham a decade back, I think during 2nd ed (no wonder I don't like it much!).

Incidentally I am being a bit cheap and using 2nd edition thunderhawks to bulk up my 2 dozen 3rd ed thunderhawks (and a few late 2nd ed ones) and I may get even cheaper and resort to FW thunderhawks! (I reckon the chapter should have 80 or so, oh and I've only got two landing craft, anyone want to donate some? :) .)

Oh and I know they are basically blue - I want to know how to get a good looking little blue man (and tank).

I've always had trouble with blue ink (it seems to come out purple) and other sundry problems.

For Thousand Sons, I sprayed with the UM blue and washed with a mix of blue ink and regal blue.  Then went back and picked out the details in burnished bold (which generally only needed one coat on the dark blue).

If you lighten that to ink/UM blue for the wash it should work for the UMs.  Or if that's too purple, you could mix black ink and UM, using less ink.  Then you just detail out the shoulder pads and flock the bases.

On vehicles, spray, wash, drybrush and add any logos or other details.

Some of my own UM chapter was speed painted like this:

Spray undercoat white
Heavy wash of thined down Regal Blue (Use a large brush for an even coat.)
Pick out details like bolters.

Works decently for regular infantry although it will hardly win any painting contests :D

For vehicles I'd put in a bit more work:
Again start with white undercoat.
Paint UM blue
WAsh Regal blue
Drybrush UM blue/white mix.
Detail.

I usually use 3-4 highlight drybrushes for a smoother transition for the top highlights but less will also work if it is just for gaming purposes.

Hmm, any pics of the results of these two? I think in the past I used to paint UM blue and drybrush with lightning blue, though the results weren't that hot.

For my UM, I sprayed them with UM Blue, applied a coat of blue ink, dry brushed them with UM blue. I then painted the weapons and painted the shoulder pad trim with the color appropriate for that company.

Try:
1 - undercoat blue spray
2 - add gun and shoulder pad details (and any others)
3 - flesh or chestnut wash. Works a treat.
4 - apply a very light drybrush if you wish
5 - paint bases

Here's a pic with the TSons, including a stand that is just sprayed so you can get an idea of contrast.  It's not the best job on the infantry details.  If I remember correctly, I was trying to get minis done for a tournament when I painted those.

For my Thousand Sons i use Black undercoat and drybrush them with Regal Blue and then with Ultramarine Blue. Then in pick out the details like bolters, shoulderpad trims, etc.

IIRC the Land Speeder was also painted this way (Though it's been a long time so I'm not completely sure anymore :p)



For the vehicles I can't quite remember which were painted using which technique anymore, since I tried out quite a few methods.
I think th?s hunter was painted that way though it may not show that well in the pic.
