I've to transplant the hardware to the case of my old 486 (because it's not only looks better but is also easier to work with when exchanging parts). Originally the machine had 16 megs of RAM (2x8). For DOS it might be allright, but for Windows 98 it's only the bare minimum. Lucky me, I had two further 8 MB sticks - again from my old 486 - so now it has 32. I've also used the PSU from my old PC, because the one this unit came with was a bit faulty. My old HDD turned out to have a few badsectors - not enough to slap a "junk" label on it, but 2 badsectors are well enough to make me wary of using it for important data (about any data, that is). Fortunately the computer came with a 1 GB HDD, so I have something - remotely - reliable to set up Windows on. All in all, I was done at 2:30 AM. ? With basic assembly, that is. ? I've found out that the motherboard has a built-in USB controller, just no slots - two of these plus an appropriate bracket are coming into the deal today. I'm also hunting for another exchangeable HDD socket, so that I can use the 800 MB HDD for DOS. t5h, why on earth would you want a DOS machine? ?That's a Linux firewall-to-be if I've ever seen one! | Linux-based firewall? ?Hmm... Might actually become another use for this thing, later on. Now, why DOS? Well... is Doom 1 enough of an answer? ? I like old DOS-based games, and using an emulator just isn't the same thing - plus some of the games run miserably. Right now, I'm thinking of setting up the machine so that the Windows HDD is the Primary Slave, with the Primary Master being set to autodetect - the HDD socket being installed for it - and the Secondary IDE devoted to the 32x CD-ROM drive. The plan is that the PC normally runs with Windows - my mother will use it as a computerized typewriter of sorts - and inserting the DOS HDD into the socket before launching it will make the machine boot in DOS, thus enabling me to play various DOS games. ?
Oh, and... that's how it looks:
I've put all the cabling so it takes as little space as possible - that's an old habit of mine, and rather a beneficial one.
I did very little in regards to modelling, unfortunately - but ?I've sorted up most of the sprues and organized the bits box way better then it was before. Going to change the base of Chaplain Raziel - 40 mm will allow for suitably impressive look. Planning a Sister of Battle conversion - at the moment, I've assembled a few concept photomontages in GIMP and in that regard it's shaping up nicely:
1 2 3 The upper half is from a Seraphim, the mace hand comes from an Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor and the legs belong to a Heavy Bolter Retributor. According to my predictions, the remaining parts will suffice for me to build a twin plasma pistol Seraphim Superior - something I've been thinking of for quite a while. Also planning to paint up that Wardancer Lord I got a week ago, thinking of putting her in a duel diorama, probably against a Dark Elf or Daemonette.
