Tempted to make a rock conversion; instead, I made a model loosely inspired by the artwork which is the subject of this thread. Link will be posted when it's fully painted, based, and photographed.
LATER: And here it is.

More theft from here.
"He also mentioned that traditionally chaotic signifiers (like tentacles and organic weaponry) have been subsumed by tyranids, so they're trying to find a distinctive look for the engines that is a) nothing like the current vehicle range, and b) distinct from tyranid creations. Because of these problems, the design sketches are pretty preliminary."

The problem is that Chaos has not been well defined in the past. Yes, tenticles and organics are Tyranid aspects, but if Chaos move further along the route that has been laid with the AI aircraft and daemon engines, they are going to end up in Dark Eldar territory.
Personally, I would head towards organic/mechanical fusion for Chaos. This has not been done in 40K yet, and would look twisted enough to work and allow Chaos to bring in any other race that I wanted to... except Necrons.

More good intell, there O-man ! Thanks ! So it appears, we can expect a little more Epic from F/W in the future ! And I agree, C/S ... Chaos has always been "the forgotten army" ... They should keep moving away from the Imperium Gothic look and push it more on Chaos ! Chaos, IMO should be full of Beetlegeuss (sp.?!), Halloween, LotR Chaos kind'a look IMO ... the Khorne D/Engines, were a little weird ... but I thought it captured Chaos ... IMO !

Thread necromancy, begin!
A much delayed thought on Chaos idiom:
One of the best ways to not be hurt in combat is simply to not be hit. There are a few ways to do this, broadly classified as "not being seen" and "being small". In other words, camoflauge and profile reduction.
Humans reduce their profile by going to ground, or hiding behind something. Vehicles reduce their profile by being constructed flatter, or hiding behind something (i.e. turret down behind a hill).
But the forces of chaos are not as enthusiastic for their own survival as humans, and furthermore, the propogation of their message is at odds with "not being seen" and "being small". Simply put, they want to be seen.
So I propose that one Chaos design idiom is: be tall, wide, and long, and be known.
This is similar to the Ork idiom of being big, but it seems to me that Chaos would deliberately want to make itself known. Ork bigness arises from wanting something satisfyingly noisy, violent, and impressive; their design idiom is a fusion of functionality and childishness.
