Setback: pincer claw mold not workable. Will try to come up with a different mold topology.

New claw mold very difficult to get good results from.
The first claw mold was a variation of a through the middle type mold, the second is a 90 degree rotation. I may try an improvement of the first type of mold.
The rest of the molds are working well (albeit slowly), and I have made a second set for most of the parts.

There's a reason I've been putting off making a Defiler for so long... and Otterman's found it!
I don't envy you this molding at all, mate!
Regards, Reaver

I admire your persistence. Include me in the group of people that's looking on with interest.

Keep at it mate, I am sure you will find a solution, and defeatthe evil inanimate object.

Here's the same claw, but with a plane cutting through it. The plane represents the place where the two mold halves come together; the halves move AWAY from the plane.
As you can see, a mold like that won't work, because the tines of the claw would stay embedded in the mold. As a general rule, the surface area of the object inside of the mold has to decrease as the mold half is removed.

Here's a different way of making the mold (this is my second topology). Once again, the plane represents where the two halves of the mold come together.
In this case, the mold is safe, and the piece can be safely extracted. In practice, though, too many air bubbles form in the extremeties of the claw, especially the tines (which are the most crucial).
I get around this by poking the resin into the tines, waiting for that to harden, then assembling the mold and doing a standard pour. This is my classic "two-part" cast. It is time consuming and prone to error.

With illuvitar's permission, and if my refinement doesn't work, I will fill in the two tines with non-hardening clay. This will make a 'mitten', but allow for an easy mold and cast.
Since I will be using clay, I can just remove it after casting, and the original pattern will be unaffected.

I wanted to make a nifty 3D diagram of the 'refinement' to the mold, but my skills with MOI aren't good enough yet. I'll take a picture of the first half tonight.
