Long time lurker, but just had to add my thumbs up as well. This has to be my favourite project right now, not just because of the bases, but the painting and palette choice. They quite simply pop in all the right ways.

But for sure, the decision to use hex bases was quite simply inspired. I have delayed re-visiting my Tyranid's for several years now because I just couldn't find a theme 'hook' I liked. I have wanted to incorporate the synapse and swarm cards idea from 2nd Edition in a similar way to what I am doing with the Ork Horde, but it never occured to me to literally use hex bases. Sheer genius.

If it wasn't for the fact my desk is currently buried under Ultramarines right now, I would be ordering MDF hexes. I think it is safe to say you have set the trend by which many Tyranid armies are going to be based I suspect. So impressed how well that works as a look; well done Sir! If and when I get around to re-doing my own, at least I know who to credit for the inspiration.

Very much looking forward to seeing your army develop and where you take it next. Great work.

Hi there! Never thought this plog would get so much attention! Really appreciate the amazing support from you fellas!

Great tempo in this thread considering the quality paint job! It is going to be a very nice army- er... swarm, I mean!

Thanks! 2 stands at a time might seem slow, but I've been painting for 34 days straight and morale is still high. Never in all the years in the hobby (and it's been good long while) have I painted for such a long stretch! And a lot of that is due to the support everyone is showing.

Canned meat or veggies? That's a difficult choice... on the other hand, nourishment is nourishment, so, you decide!

Maybe hex is the new black! *or something like that :)

Fantastic army!

;D Never thought of it like that!

You honor me very much by coming out of the murky shadows and posting here, of all the great threads around. Almost speechless!

Never thought I might start a trend with the bases! The idea stuck in my head ever since I first saw the swarm cards in Space Marine. Color-wise, I wanted to keep it simple, contrasting but with a common base for all colors, and a unifying look across the whole swarm. Quite happy with the result so far!

Painting-wise, they're nice, but Light-years way from Fredmans' Tyranids, but that's ok, I'm not going for perfection. Main goal is to finish the whole swarm and enjoy the process while doing it.

Btw, long time fan of your blog, way back since dropship 40k.

Now for the progress from the last few days. 6 Genestealers w/ Broodlord (not that happy with him)

10 more to go.

Still stuck on the bases' detailing. I was thinking of going for tundra static grass, few ruins, or something like that. Don't really know yet.

That's it for now. Cheers!

Go for sick dying grass and plants with little nasty 'nid things starting to grow. As is the planet ecophage is starting to be felt.

You should be, it is the sharp palette and complementing base contrast that makes it stand out so nicely. I agree with Jimmyzimms in a dark or dying grass would work best on that base. I don't think you want something that contrasts too much with the base colour otherwise it will be in danger of clashing with the Nids and making the bases look muddled colour wise. I would add a grass or other flock that adds tonal and texture variety rather than contrast.

Time is my enemy mostly. I have lurked for years, just don't find the time to post as much as I would like. That applies to my own blog as much as being a bit more active here.
Anyway, I don't want to hi-jack Kalrath's blog, so will keep it short. I am doing a bit more Epic at the moment as it happens, and the plan is to see that through the winter a bit more.

Not Tyranids though, I leave that to Kalrath .... at least not 'yet' anyway ;)

Regards

You are too harsh on yourself. That is a very functional way of making the Broodlord stand out, further accentuated by clever placement. Good to see that the swarm keeps growing.

Thanks! I've decided to add a touch more of contrast to the brood lords, as I found that the carapace being the only differentiating factor wasn't enough to spot the stand.

Anyhow, here is the progress for the last week. 2 Genestealer Swarms done:

Next up 7 Biovores!

Cheers!

Love the horde pic man, that's how nids should look, a carpet of critters, run away.

Mate,

Great work, the hex bases look fantastic and really goes along way to making it feel like a hord army. Looking forward to seeing more of the hord.

Cheers
