... ok i got distracted by last nights thread about whether people had elysians. I do not, this made me sad, so I gnawed some plasticard to cheer up. I really like the FW valk/vult, but at that price you'd be looking at £100 for an army's worth i guess, so not an option. I got some EW valks a while back to use instead, but they didn't really feel right, so they got chucked in a pile of other bits, until now :P

(excuse the wiggly panel lines and mismatched holes, think of this as a sketch, thrusters and landing gear can easily be added to wing tips)

The main difference is the tail and the wings/rotors. You can snap the rotors off in your hand, so I replaced them with wings and made my own tail.

The other 2 big differences are the nose and the cockpit. The GW vulture is snub nosed and awesomely brutish looking, the EW offering is a bit sleeker and sharper, I was going to snub it off, but decided to keep it as it was. The cockpit, ugh, i tried adding a 2nd one on top in temporary sculpy, didn't work, i think you'd need to grind the original one down to reshape it and make more room for a 2nd:

So, the options are:
FW (not really an option, too $$$)
GW, haha, hahahahhahaha, no :P
EW (don't really fit with the GW style)
EW converted as in top pic
Scratch-build something better

Thoughts?

"Thoughts?"

Very cool conversion. You need to produce large quantities of EW conversion kits as soon as possible. Judging by your cutlery monsters and copper arachnids, I have complete and utter faith in you ;)

Very good conversion. I would stick with the orginal EW models as an homage to the original designer. As I already have several Valkyrie it allows me to use my EW ones as Vendettas.

Great conversion.
Perhaps what the Adeptus Mechanicus did to the Squat Gyrocopters when Valks were designed in the first place.
Plasticard is just old school CAD-matter print. Cubes and blocks manupulated by a skilled modeler instead of a machine. Wish I had those skills, it's very impressive and must be a heck of alot faster and cheaper.

Actually think I need to thicken the parts up as well. Hadn't really considered that the EW hull is chunkier than the FW, looks a bit fragile and mismatched as it is. Don't seem to have and .75mm around though, so will have to jump from .5 to 1mm :-\

Nice work. I like the EW enough not to fix it myself, though.

I heartily agree.

I do love our Otter and the crazy tea drinkers at EW but I don't like the look of the EW Valk in its base state. Like others have said it doesn't "fit" the IG feel to me. They remind of Squarts, lol.

great conversion!

may I ask how you did the recessed "lines" on the wings? I tried doing something similar, but carving them with a hobby knive didn't look too nice (I held the thing sideways and carved with the tip, so esentially I got a - more or less - triangular groove).

cheers,

Those were done with a burin (a very fine engraver's chisel), the tip of which can be seen in the last image. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burin
The other method ive used is to lightly mark with a knife, then score with a large needle, creating a groove -- the burr left is then scraped off with a blade.

You can get special plasticard scribers, but I don't have any, if anyone has link to a UK supplier, please share.

i actually just recieved my set of burins today, only i'm still way confused as to wth i'm supposed to be doing to get them useful (they're apparntly blanks, rather than pre-sharpened, though i have a sharpening tool of some description, i havent got an oilstone yet)

Blank burins? interesting. Are they 'completely' bank as it were -- eg do they have the cross section shape cut in but a squared off end, or just square all over?

I got a set of 4 or 5 for plate making, originally to use for thier intended purposes, but they ahve since found thier way into my modelling tools ;D The 'sharpener' for mine is just a guide for holding and angling correctly over a stone, I wouldn't want to cut the tool shape using it.
