I have a bunch of counters from EM4 stockpiled for use as bases - and I even use some of them!  Got some orange and white 12mm counters for blast and shield markers too.
I'm thinking of using the 31mms for irregular infantry too, if I ever start with nids or orks.  Thing is, I sat down and theoryhammered it (I feel so dirty...) and while the round counters have a larger surface area than 40x12mms, they have a significantly smaller zone of control.
It's still very unlikely to make me dump the idea of round bases for infantry, but I thought I'd mention it. :)) It might suit the theme of undrilled infantry, too.

Now, on-topic. Flipping excellent nids.  Some of the best I've seen.  I'm not too fond of the use of 40K carnis as heirophants or similar, but that's not a gripe aimed specifically at you, and it is well modelled and painted.

Fantastic Squats! I love the muted tones. I have something like that in mind for my own squats.

Very cool painting Hojyn.

I'm really looking forward to painting my brother Squats... one day.
Yours will serve as good inspiration until then.

Well... I haven't updated my gallery in more than a year, but I haven't been totally idle. :)

Big post, plenty of new pics. :D

First, I've redone the stands of my Daemons (it used to be snow... but I've never found the courage to do snowy terrain, so they look weird on my usual jungle table).

Keeper of Secrets (a thousand apologies to Warmaster Nice, who asked for those pics ages ago... but TC collapsed and then I completely forgot about it. :-[ I guess it's a bit late for his project now. :-\ )

I've also had time to finally complete my Word Bearers army, so here it is (minus one Banelord Titan which I forgot to include in the pic, but you can see it somewhere else in this gallery).

Some of the pictures are a bit dark, sorry about that.

That's close to 6000 army points, more than enough for now. :D

And now that the Word Bearers are operational, I've turned to my Squats again. Here's a step-by-step evolution of the project (there are some IG models in the pictures because I plan to also use my Squats as proxies for my IG army - both armies share the same colour scheme, with different helmets).

I am now in the process of painting the infantry... expect pics next week or so. :)

Alright, so it's been 5 years (5 years !) since I updated this topic. Quite a long time, but lately I've decided to take up my brushes again. At least half of my paints have dried, so I've had to buy new ones. I bought a complete set of Scale75 paints, but I'll integrate them progressively while my other GW pots last.

As of now, I've tried the metallic colours (quite nice, better than GW's so far) and the Scale75 White (disappointing, very thick paint and dries very fast -even with high dilution-, leaving some king of paste on the brush).

Anyway, I picked up my painting schedule where I left it a couple of years ago. My Squat army is almost done now, I just need to paint the war engines and I'll be good to go. For starters, here's my Land Train, minus the runes (I'll add them later).

I'm usually quite lazy as a painter, but this time I've refrained from using the tried and tested drybrush method and used something more elaborate instead. I've spent quite some time on shading and highlights, but even if the result is not so bad considering I've never done this before, I think I can do better with some experience. The highlights in particular may be too strong. Advice is welcome, as usual. :)

5 years?!

Top lurkage, as they say!

I am very lazy, I don't feel bad about using drybrush, ha ha. As for your work, I think it looks grand, not too on the nose at all.

OK well, I'm still a bit slow but here a step-by-step "tutorial" for my Squats WE. This will help me maintain my motivation. :)

First, two coats of Mechrite Red for a deep red base
Image

Red Gore
Image

Blood Red
Image

Then a light wash of GW Red Ink
Image

Another wash, using Gryphonne Sepia this time for the first shadows and also to get rid of the shiny aspect typical of GW's old washes
Image

Then Chestnut Ink, applied only in the recesses for deeper shadows
Image

Highlights are made with a 1:1 mix of Vomit Brown and Tallarn Flesh (found this tip on the Internet to highlight red, works quite well)
Image

Then I go over all the "gunmetal" parts with a coat of grey (I find this easier as GW's metallic paints tend to have poor coverage, particularly when diluted)
Image

Next I'll do the same with Tausept Ochre for the "golden" parts, then paint the metallic colours proper.

At the insistence of a few members of the epic_fr forum, I've decided to try my hand at painting runes on my Land Train. This is my first foray into freehand territory, so be lenient. :) Truth be told though, I'm not unhappy with the result, even if I've still much to learn.

Very nice work on these classic pieces and the freehand looks fine to me.
