This means for trade purposes, selling, or just for your own collection.

I heard that as long as you've purchased an original copy of the miniature from GW, that gives you the legal right to make a copy of it for 'backup' purposes (The same arguament that allows you to record films off of the TV).

I've no idea if that arguament is actually true. :)

Plus, I don't see how sculpting a techpriest for your own personal collection is illegal.

I am well aware of what the goliath is. I was pointing out that It technically makes no difference - you're re-casting another companies product without a license. Not trying to paint you as a bad guy (you're certainly not y all accounts!), just making sure you're aware of it mate ?

Shh! I was telling hotwire. :;):

You may not be interested in something from another company, but DRM & EW aren't second class citizens.

Personally, I rate them several notches above SG/GW.

on behalf of DRM (and if I may be so bold, EW too!) - thanks for the vote of confidence.

Certainly with regards to DRM, about 40% of the miniatures get sent back for refinement once Doug's seen the greens. There's nobody more picky (including myself!) about the quality of the miniatures he puts out than Doug is - the mans a GW collector to the extremes & the minaitures DRM produces are set to the level he'd expect to get from Forgeworld (or above).

I'm afraid that is certainly not true when it comes to figures.

There are a very few lines (prince August, parts of the hasslefree range, parts of Ebob miniatures & a 6mm sci fi line called "colony caster" or somesuch) which sell re-production rights with their minaitures.

Re-casting of figures beyond those that specifically state its allowed, is illegal.

Sculpting a techpriest for your own collection isn't illegal.
Casting it & passing themonto anyone by sale or trade is what's illegal. Its profiting (in any form, if not cash) off the IP of another person/company/entity.

Well, I can see that this is real fast going to turn into another debate about legal matters, what should be legal, intellectual property, and the Commons.

So, should we continue down that path and bifurcate the topic? Or is Hotwire's initial request DOA (dead on arrival)?

It was my interpretation that Hotwire was proposing an in-Tactical Command trade of doodads. Sadly, he wants GW flavored doodads, so we can't necessarily help him there. But there is an unfortunate gap between what DRM/EW can make, and what we want. After all, it probably isn't profitable to commission, mold, and cast a few dozen figures.

Has anyone got a list of what they consider good proxies for troops and vehicles that can't be sourced from GW? I think that would certainly help many others like me with an epic addiction and wants to move away from the core armies!

I've suggested this before, but it didn't go anywhere.  I'd really like to see something like this.  Everytime I think I've seen all the good proxies, someone comes up with more.

For example, Zap123 uses DRM Jungle troops as Hive Gangers.  Brilliant!

Tac Comm is always a good source of other peoples ideas.

Call it an alien spoor and it's all dandy... as long as visually it's not derived from GW's IP (You could draw from the same inspiration that GW used and achieve a very similar result though lol)

The Techpriest, while an original sculpt, is still a Techpriest until you name it something else. ?A techpriest is a GW concept and therefore, ILLEGAL.

I was going to say "I agree. ?Which is why I'll send Otterman a 'Mechmage'," but I think we're past that point...

The legal implications confuse me and frankly, bore me. ?Which is why I'm fond of the old chestnut 'if in doubt, leave it out'.
Though this only refers to casting, true? ?I'm pretty sure the sale of unique/individual sculpts or conversions is tolerated by GW (probably among the legal rumblings on the site, IIRC). ?Which means that, to echo E&C, my own li'l techpriest for my own li'l army should be perfectly acceptable.

Well as I said before and Paul just now, The Creators of DRM & E/W are Epic-philes and are "saving" 6mm sci-fi, with these ever growing excellent lines !  And Mephiston - just look at the DRM & E/W figs and you can judge from yourself ! Both Infantry and AFVs especially human, can fill the ranks of any IG Force, with more to come !  But that might be a good little project, in the future ...     And Hotwire - the USAF runs Area 51, not the US Army (but the Army & USMC are up the road a piece !  Been there ! :D ) ... :alien:

Are we to one day not be able to come up with anything new because someone will already hold the rights to the idea?
