Thanks Apoc.

I haven't been posting much but I have been busy. There's some 40 stands of Epic Sisters of Battle I need to post pictures of, but I'm not a fan of what I did with the bases so I'm not looking at them for awhile. I also headed back to the Union skirmish infantry for my American Civil War project as well, hopefully I'll finish those up in the next few weeks.

In the meantime, buddy Karl was talking 3mm fantasy so we held each other's hand and drove off that cliff Thelma and Louise style. I picked up the Dread Elves from Microworld Games and started messing around with a classic Warhammer Fantasy Dark Elf scheme. We're going to base them on 40mm frontage bases for Triumph! to play some Grand Triumph! Fantasy. The massed troops on the bases should help sell the look, and the 3mm troops make for an excellent bargain for the number of bases we'll need.

I finished up my test unit of 3mm Dread Elves. Getting the flock between the strips wasn't too bad, I was thinking I might have to base one row at a time but I don't think that will be necessary. The base is printed, I made three grooves along its length to recess the strips. Not sure if I'm going to put a decal on the banner yet. Definitely not doing decals on the shields or pins for the spears this time though. :P

Thanks Apoc.

I'm currently basing up some 6mm American Civil War Union Skirmishers, but in the meantime here's some 3mm Dark Elves I finished last week and based today.

It's enjoyable. Small armies (12-24 stands), small footprint (64x96cm with 4cm wide bases) and games play out in under an hour once you're familiar with the rules. All those were big selling points for Breadstick and me. We demoed way back in 2017 I think? And have been playing for about 3 years now.

Deployment matters a lot, and so does terrain. It has a neat system for terrain generation using army invasion/maneuver ratings, a die roll, picking a random terrain card, and the player rolling highest get to choose the pieces.

For play, you bounce back and forth pretty quick. You get a d6 worth of orders to move, then shooting (defender first) and then combat (active player chooses order). Combat is opposed d6, plus your troops combat factor, plus a modifier or two (flanking, rear support, rough terrain, etc). Winner pushes the loser back, unless the score is double in which case the loser is destroyed and the winner moves half a base forward. There's a bunch of exceptions to these (evade the destruction, lose if beaten, etc) that make for more realistic matchups based on troop types. There's maybe 20 different troop types?

The rules themselves are legalese. They can be difficult to parse (due to length) but make sense for the most part. Where you find a specific rule isn't always intuitive though. There is an index however.

For this 3mm stuff, we'll be using Triumph! Fantasy. 99% the same, with a few fantasy additions (flyers, heroes), and a whole bunch of battle cards (they allow you can customize your troops to suit). I also have Sword & Spear Fantasy, Milites Mundi, Chipco Fantasy Rules and Fantastic Battles. I'm hoping to try out a few of them with this stuff too.

thanks for the write up on that, hadn't realised there was an official fantasy variation , ill have to look into this in more detail. small table and fast play but with meaningful decision making is what im after

No problem. I'll report in if and when I get in some games with the other rule systems I have.

Figuring out how to paint the crossbows next. There's a bit more percision painting on these compared to the spears because of all the bits off the crossbow that I'm hitting.
