What do you do to course correct? Have you been successful in getting it to Matte?

I've only manged it once or twice but I've never had success to the level I'd like. Personally I'd love to figure out how to control the glossiness on the models more consistently since that would let me better approximate different materials.

Most of the final models after varnish tend to have a fairly low glossiness that's generally not noticeable but it's still there if you hit it right. I usually control the light setup when I take the shots so that the light doesn't hit the model at an angle that would reflect it.

Yes, always have used Dullcote. But you can't spray it on heavy. Just a quick spray all around and at about a 12 inches away ...

Re paintbrush, for my standards, somewhat thinned Tamiya guck is quite enough. I find that there's a trade off between enough effect and slight chalkiness. I have actually not measured and/or kept records...

What do you use to thin it down?

It is actually called flat base and it is da bomb. Well known in scale modelling. It is not a flat varnish. Instead it will render any gloss paint it is mixed into dead flat.Actually, thinking about it made me realize I should probably be a big more structured. A quick googling gave me this advice:

For Final matt coat:     20% Tamiya X-21 Flat base, 30% X-22 Clear and 50% Thinner X-20A

For semigloss effects you would be using about 5 to 10% X-21.

If you get whitening, or frosting, in your matt coats you've got too much flat base, X-21 in it. Don't panic, just load up 50% Clear X-22 and 50% X-20A and give it a light coat, it should disappear.

Also, if you use airbrush, make sure you don't have too much pressure, or you risk the paint drying before landing, giving you a slightly textured finish.

Does that 20/30/50 mix need to be thinned for airbrushing?

Was planning on using a brush only. I'll look into the Flat Base.

The sad part is my models are jacked beyond repair now. To the Simple Green with them... At least its a small batch and I'll circle back to them when I finish the rest of my army.

I called Testors and they said the cans I had were part of a bad batch. They are sending me new product.
I also ordered the paint on Dullcoat. I'll see if/how that works.

Thanks for all of the advice guys it was a big help.

I don't think so, but as I mentioned, I was less scientific when I last used the stuff.
