Stupid question...I assume these are specialty printers and not something you can walk into Costco to buy? I run a hotel, and we buy our printers from Costco, and when they break (even years later....yes, years) we walk it in and return it. Yes. Then we buy another one. Brilliant, I say...

Correct. These are not Wal-Mart/Best Buy printers.

The printers that we (from what I know, most of the small decal producers) is the ALPS MD-5000 or ALPS-MD5500. These are currently no longer made by ALPS USA. ALPS Japan appears to make the 5500, but the only place I've seen them available new is from New Zealand, and price + shipping is prohibitive.

The good thing about these printers is that they print white. This allows for a) white decals and b) undercoating colors so that they don't darken when applied over a dark color.

The printers use ink cartridges (like old Cassette tapes) and heat the color onto the media.

Unfortunately (and it may just be my personal curse) they are the least reliable devices I've ever seen.

Mostly you can find them on e-bay, but rarely win auctions for less than $500-$900 + shipping.

I currently have 4 that don't work.
