I have done the same thing. The magnets are cheap, but if you want them to go further or there isnt a good spot to put 2 magnets, a thin sheet of metal works great. I use the steel sheets for roofing. real cheap at Home Depot.

Single magnets and steel make a lot of sense...

I suppose Litko's steel paper might be easier to work with than sheet steel, or steel-infused paint.

The stainless steel I used was really easy to work with. A hand held hole punch wouldn't punch a hole in the steel. So, I used a 3-hole punch for the mechanical advantage. The downside was the circles came out bent, but then I took a hammer and flattened them back out.

Uh, stainless steel is not magnetic. It was probably normal [carbon] steel with electro-plating, or simply was free of corrosion.

So, don't buy stainless steel sheets, they won't work.

Yeah I know, it's not actually stainless steel, but I think that's what the train shop called it.
